Toronto "Slut Walk"

Does anyone else find this...weird? I dont understand what is wrong with it in any way, and for those who dont want to watch the video here is a quick summary.

"Proud" and "awesome" sluts are marching in Toronto for their right to dress like sluts. The protest is in response to a male cop who advised women to "avoid dressing like sluts" in order not to be victimized and raped.

Questions for debate: Was the cop giving bad advice? Was he interfering with their rights to dress slutty? Was the advice common sense?

Actually, reports of rape are very low in countries where women wear the burqua. Also the justice system is heavily biased against women witnesses in countries where women wear burquas. Could there be a correlation?
Anything is possible, but your right. The fact that the reports are low mean almost nothing.

since men ‘have evolved sexual preferences for young and healthy women and are attracted to women who signal potential availability by means of dress and behavior,’ women should be informed of the risk factors and use the information to lower their risk of rape by paying attention, for example, to dress and appearance.
The link yesterday was broken but appears to be fixed now. The quote is taken from an article by Randy Thornhill and Craig Palmer. Note that in the paper you link Waal points out there is not a shred of evidence to support their view.
I am not claiming it is the only reason but that if women pay attention it can lower their chance for rape.
Well this seems to repeat the point that rape is a crime of sexual gratification and then relies on the logic that those women who show more flesh or wear tight closes put themselves at greater risk by arousing the rapist. But as has been pointed out research shows rape to be foremost a crime of power and domination.

But here is some logic, if your advice is sound then across all rapes women wearing "slutty" clothes need to account for at least 51% of rape cases. If say they accounted for 15% then we should be advising women to wear slutty clothes to stand less chance of being raped....no? Non slutty clothers being correlated to agreater degree with being raped. Howewer I don’t believe we know what the figure is or even how to quantify "sluttiness." But as most rapes are committed by relatives, acquaintances, friends, partners and ex partners the suspicion is that the rapes have nothing to do with what the woman wears and much more to do with attitudes of rapist towards women.

Hey Mormonboy!

I've been meaning to comment on this thread since last week but kept getting distracted with other crap. Anyways, from what I'm reading in your posts you seem to have a bit of a misunderstanding on what motivates a rapist and why most rapes occur. So allow me to take you to school *cracks his knuckles* ;)
I still stand by my belief that there must be some type of physical attraction before rape ever occurs.
I worked several sexual assault cases of both juveniles and adults, with both male and female victims, as a police officer in Houston, Tx.. a very large city with a high crime rate.

I gotta say man, I never interviewed a rapist who was just walking around with an erection looking for a "hot chick" to grab. Every sexual assault I worked was because the suspect was motivated by either a hatred of women or was angry at women in general for being scorned. They wanted to express their dominance and impose their will. The actual sex that took place was simply a weapon to demean and humiliate the woman, it wasn't because he was just so turned on he had to have her right then and there.

I also worked a few cases were rape was used a punishment or payback to a known individual. Absolutely no sexual attraction was required and it definitely didn't matter what the person was wearing at the time.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, because I'm sure quite a few date rapes are motivated by sexual desire, but I never worked one where a woman was raped because of her clothing in my experience.

However, it may be interesting to note that the sexual assaults I worked that involved male on male (outside of prison) were way more sexually motivated rather than hate or power motivated. Quite the opposite in prison, from what I hear. I never worked a prison rape case.

But anyways, my main point is, most people who have very little experience with rape and rape victims probaly don't understand the motivation behind the crime, which is perfectly normal. It would seem that because the elements of the crime include a sexual act along with the assault that it MUST be a crime purely motivated by sexual desire, when in fact that has very little to do with it. It is definitely motivated by an expression of power and desire to demean the victim.

Regardless of the clothing.

Hope that makes sense! :)

I'm with the sluts.

But I'd also like to see the word slut disappear from the english language, or used a lot less often. A 'slut' is merely a woman who is sexually liberated. Why the insult? Why the disrespect? I reserve the word slut for a serial bedder-down of other women's men.

I'd like the word to lose its gender bias. Why is a sexually promiscuous woman called a slut but her male counterpart is not? We look down our noses at the slut, but give a nod an a wink to a stud?

I am not sure that it is ignored. Haven't you ever heard the term 'man whore'? I have see that term used (I admit, mainly by women of the generation after me).

Oddly enough, in board gaming circles, the word slut is beginning to be used in reference to both sexes. A board game slut is one who has no favorite game and prefers games that look pretty and are fun to those that provide strategic challenge.

Actually, fun fact about Ontario, it is perfectly legal for women to walk down the street topless. Parks and beaches are fair game as well.

So, really, the women dressed slutty are being quite modest.

That is true in New York too. Anyplace a man can go topless, so can women.

However, custom is much stronger than law. No one does.
