Also, as I look at the WORLD overall (using both secular and religious perspectives) I realize that many people just need to back-off of others a bit, and understand that their militancy or extreme views of things, often tend to lead to people being view or treated in improper ways. If they care about others, they will adjust their approach to many different things; otherwise, they will continue to assume they are "in-charge", contributing to the world's overall misery.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't exercise moral values or take a stand on things, but that there are real "limits" to be recognized as related to any one person's or group's "autonomy in the real world. And also for many more people to understand that the problems generated which stem from the thoughts and actions of those who rush headlong into their militancy or extremism are significant (to say the least).

People (especially religious folks) should begin to honestly examine their beliefs and the view which got them there. Not to unravel or dismantle one's view of their "faith" completely, but to align more of what they hold to be "true" with the actual reality of things we all experience as human beings in general.

I agree with everything you say, but I wouldn't point out the especially religious folks. I think nontheists also have to exercise a bit of tolerance and and understand that what we view as reality and human experience may not ever align with theists views. And that is ok. So long as we don't shove it down their throats (unless provoked) and they don't shove it down our throats (unless provoked). This site is a debate site. It is a site to lay out your beliefs and analyze while allowing others to analyze them as well. It is easy for us to miss our biases and we need others to point these out so we can all grow.

But I am very familiar with the kind of pain that comes from "religion" (how people wield it). I was basically a fundamentalist "Christian" for the majority of my life (over 40 years). I even learned to hate not only my "sin", but myself in the overall process. It even seemed "normal" while I was doing it (go figure).

So, while it wasn't my intention to imply/say that ALL "religious folks" are worse than others (I am one); I did want to emphasize that my experiences stem from what "Christians" have believed, said and done about homosexuality and homosexuals. I spent a LONG time learning how to live without HATING the very religion I was raised to regard (to the very core of my being).

It's interesting that you picked up on what I view to be remnants of a very long battle I struggled through; but no, I don't have a particular bone to pick in that case. It's merely that I recognize more of the specific "mechanisms" within "religion" that lead to many of the problems which don't exists as readily in more secular thinking.

I'm well-aware that some non-religious people have also been taught/conditioned to hate homosexuality and/or homosexual people; I witness it often enough. And that is likely the main reason that for ME, I eventually shifted from a more religous view of things, to a social or political one (over time). Again, it's just that I'm much more familiar with the mechanisms and reasons for the negativity toward homosexuality which exist in certain "religious" circles.
