According to Catholicism, unbaptized infants go to hell.

The Council of Florence infallibly taught:

But the souls of those who depart this life in actual mortal sin, or in original sin alone, go down straightaway to hell to be punished, but with unequal pains. (Florence, Sixth Session, 6 July 1439.)

This is an "infallible" and hence unchangeable teaching which everyone has to believe.

So infants who died without being baptized went to hell. This was originally a teaching of St. Augustine.

In my opinion, Baptism is an outward sign to the world of your choice to be good and follow good. It is not required to be good. It is a symbolic ritual cleansing.

Baptism is not required to be good. An atheist can be good by simply following natural law, but Baptism can help in being good, as we receive sanctifying grace from God. Catholics do not believe Baptism is merely a symbolic ritual. The soul is left with an indelible mark. Hence, the significance of the sacrament and why Jesus Himself was Baptized to show us the importance and necessity in doing so.

Water baptism was symbolic with regard to repentance, and accompanies confession of ones sins (Matthew 3:6) What Yeshua brought was the baptism of the Spirit (Matthew 3:11) Babies dont sin, and they certainly do not repent, or confess their sins. What is in store for those who do not produce fruit, will be the baptism by fire. Matthew 3:10 every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire. That includes the "brood of vipers" who were baptised by water (Matthew 3:7).

I believe all who profess faith should be fully immersed and baptized. I was just giving the history of it, which all should know. Baptism by the Holy Spirit through Christ. Leading by example, Christ would not have done it, if it weren't so essential. (it fulfilled scripture). I agree it is a great help. "make your body a Temple the Lord can inhabit."
