It seems to me, that new members rarely post a introduction thread anymore. As such I am making this thread as a way that new members can say hi, and get to know a couple of people on the forums.

So to all the new members:

First of all, hello!

Second, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself?
“People generally quarrel because they cannot argue.
- G.K. Chesterton

“A detective story generally describes six living men discussing how it is that a man is dead. A modern philosophic story generally describes six dead men discussing how any man can possibly be alive.
- G.K. Chesterton

Ive been lurking around the forum and reading for a bit now..thought it was time to introduce myself.
My name is Cheri and I was raised a Lutheran. When I got older I went on my way in life, not particularly concerning myself with much except there was pry a God, but He wasn't gunning for me and the end wasn't gonna be pretty. If I recall right ..I was actually believing as a Calvinst without even knowing that branch of religion existed.
Basically, I just wandered thru life, and one day found myself in a crapstorm when I stumbled upon a web page concerning religion. So so many ...so so many beliefs. And to be honest...Christians, or the label thereof, has caused me the most turmoil in my life since.
At this point in my life..I think its time to just clean the slate and start new and see what 'evidence' there really is. Through reading here, Ive ran across some of you I do have questions for..and when I find the threads again..I will ask them :)

So hello to all...and happy discovering :)

Hi I am a student at a university and we had a project to join a virtual community we would never have otherwise affiliated with.
I am curious to learn people's different views on religion and evolution etc. and so far based off of the posts I've read, I am seeing quite a lot of different viewpoints. It is all very interesting to me and I hope to be able to interact even though I am not as educated as most of the people who post

Well, interacting here is one way to get yourself educated about different viewpoints. Welcome, and enjoy.
“What do you think science is? There is nothing magical about science. It is simply a systematic way for carefully and thoroughly observing nature and using consistent logic to evaluate results. So which part of that exactly do you disagree with? Do you disagree with being thorough? Using careful observation? Being systematic? Or using consistent logic?

Hello all,
I came here, really, so that I'll have something at least somewhat worthwhile to do when I feel like slacking off. I'm looking to have good debates, see what others believe and why they believe so, challenge the beliefs of others, and refine my own beliefs.

There's not much to say about myself that's noteworthy, I'm just a student interested in philosophy, theology, and science who struggles daily to take up his cross. I'm extremely interested in the Seminary and dream of becoming a Dominican or perhaps even a monk, but for now all I can do is work on building myself a strong foundation is faith and reason after a long struggle with nonbelief and philosophical skepticism.

Welcome :).

One thing to keep in mind: fundamentalism and atheism aren't the only options. You should look at the work of liberal Catholics like J.D. Crossan.

Hi everyone -

My username here is "Heretic Gal", and I'm a newbie to your excellent forum. But I'm definitely NOT a newbie to Internet discussion forums.

Though it's been a while, a few of you may know me under one of my other Net names: "windsofchange" and "theistgal". As "windsofchange" I was an active participant at the old Internet Infidels board (even became a moderator for a while). As "theistgal" I have been an active participant at the Catholic Answers Forum.

I have been both an atheist and a theist at multiple times in my life, and because I read constantly and thus enter into the minds of other people on a daily basis, I make no promises as to what six impossible things I might be believing before breakfast tomorrow.

However, at the moment, I am an uneasy theist of the Martin Gardner fideist variety: I readily concede that atheism makes sense, but credo consolans anyway. At the moment. But I'm also a big Julia Sweeney fan, so in the wonderful imagery she uses in "Letting Go of God", I'm basically at the point where God is still hanging around at my front door sitting on his luggage.

Other pertinent data: I'm over 50, female, married late in life to a wonderful guy who got me involved in the music program at our church (Catholic). Which makes it way harder for me to "out" myself as an atheist again (I have been out before), because I know myself well enough at this point in my life to know that the SECOND I declare myself a believer or a nonbeliever, I'll start being tempted to the opposite side within a very very short time.

SO - uneasy theist? not quite fully convinced atheist? Who knows? Not me, that's for sure. But one thing I do know: no matter what I currently believe, it makes me a HERETIC to someone! So I'm quite happy to be known as HERETIC GAL, now and forever!

Thanks for having me! I've already read LOTS of threads here and feel I know a lot of you already! :-)
