Some'll say that if you reject Bible tales, you'll burn in Hell.
For debate:
Please offer some means to confirm the veracity of the claim.
If the claim can't be shown to be true and factual, is it uncivil, or perhaps more importantly morally right to present such an argument in order to encourage religious belief?
Why might a response of "Go to Hell" be inappropriate in the face of such a threat to one's well-being, while the threat itself may receive a pass?

Re: Non-believers to BURN IN HELL!
Post #11If you believe in a leader you are willing to do what they say. What Jesus says in John is to do what he commanded and to love one another. What commandments did Jesus give? Matthew 19.AquinasD wrote:Mmm... But that is a rather simplistic reading, and doesn't account for, say, the commands to believe in Christ as Lord and Savior, not to mention the vaster Christian tradition within which Scripture has its place.ThatGirlAgain wrote:I was not taking aim at that particular target. (Today anyway) Just showing that according to the Gospels earning eternal life does not require anything more than honestly living a moral and charitable moral life.
As Augustine says, "Love, and do as you will."
Considering that he was speaking before the crucifixion, what other interpretation would his audience have put on it?
Dogmatism and skepticism are both, in a sense, absolute philosophies; one is certain of knowing, the other of not knowing. What philosophy should dissipate is certainty, whether of knowledge or ignorance.

Re: Non-believers to BURN IN HELL!
Post #12I think it is important to point out that Christianity is not a religion, and that the Bible never says that if you reject what it says you will go to hell. Instead, we have Jesus, who said beautiful things about a life that He alone can offer us. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Jesus' invitation was to believe in him, and put your faith and trust in who he is. It is by coming to him that we become aware of his great love for us. The love that he has for you!! It is through him that we learn about the character and holiness of God.JoeyKnothead wrote:Some'll say that if you reject Bible tales, you'll burn in Hell.

Isn't that infinitely more interesting than worrying about what the Bible says about hell?

I am a little puzzled by this thread. There have been 11 responses so far, and only one has remotely addressed the question in the OP. Here is the question for debate:
I would really like to see a post here that actually addresses the question of the OP! If I have myself misunderstood the question, please point that out to me!
All except one post have gone to some length to confirm that the claim or threat is actually made by Christianity, but that is obvious and needs no confirmation. That is not the question !The quiestion is to confirm that if you reject the Bible tales, you will in fact, in reality, in truth, go to hell! Some'll say that if you reject Bible tales, you'll burn in Hell.

Please let’s not go down the proof only line yet again.
I don’t think anybody can prove that aliens exist but I would suspect I am not the only one who thinks that it is very unlikely that they don’t somewhere.
The rest of the question is most likely to be the interesting part.

I suggest we retaliate in kind. Many zealot Christians actually believe in demons! I suggest if we seriously threatened them with a demon infestation of their home, many of them would be trembling in terror at the slightest late-night creaking sound in their attic.
This should be done carefully and seriously, referring to the selected demon by name and with appropriate language and even incantations. This may sound silly to rational people, but Christians take such things seriously. It should put a stop to some of the offensive preaching here.

I 'preciate your noticing. I think it points to the lack of scrutiny / critical examination religious claims enjoy.JohnPaul wrote:I am a little puzzled by this thread. I don't know doubt there's some good thinking to be had regarding why such a notion as Hell may be useful. I just don't get the idea that threatening folks with it would be considered the great tactic its use implies.

I happen to be among the group that thinks one should be willing to support (or retract) their assertions. I propose a better notion'd be, "Let's not threaten folks they're going to a Hell we can't even show exists."
The rest of the question is most likely to be the interesting part.
Well then, what say ye?

My original and follow-up posts have dealt with my assertion, with scriptural backup, that the claim is not only not supportable by scripture but contradicted by it. Since those who make such a claim would undoubtedly give great credence to the Bible, we have a means to confirm the veracity of the claim and said claim has failed the test. It seems to me that I have fully addressed the OP question.JohnPaul wrote:I am a little puzzled by this thread. My post was intended to anchorage opinion. Something I find most interesting regardless of accompanying proof.

(Not that thatGirl needs any assistance from me)
But as you asked; I personally do believe that it is morally wrong to threaten another person with Hell or anything else for that matter, as a form of coercion regarding beliefs or lack thereof.
I also think that it is the least likely tactic to work.
Forced actions are easily doable, even if not all that moral but forced beliefs are just too much like hard work.
However I see no problem with somebody telling me that according to their understanding of their religion they honestly believe that; ......
I will be going to hell.
