Which of these Holy Books are divinely inspired?

Post by polonius »

Most of the world's major religions have holy books. Each are considered to be inspired by the members of certain religions.

Which do you think are divinely inspired and which are not?

And how do you know?

I'm pretty familiar with the story, I was just wondering if there are any explicit statements of divine inspiration in the Quran itself...

Muslims consider the entire work to be of divine inspiration.

Yes, the Quran repeatedly asserts its divine origin. To pick one of a number of examples:
Quran 5:48 wrote:
And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it.

Thanks, do you have any others, that one is too obscure, badly written in English and doesn't seem to be claiming divine inspiration for the Quran.

Thanks in advance,

JW
And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad],
(someone) showed Mohammed

the Book in truth,
A truthful book [or] a true revelaton of a book

confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture
which confirmed that what was written before

and as a criterion over it.
established the standard which [the book ?] must meet
Whoever translated the above should be shot; it makes little sense in modern day Engish as it stands, but this is what I understood it to me (bold).

Does this answer you question about authorship of Koran?

Repeating my answer of 24 September:

In the Quran, God addresses Prophet Muhammad, You never recited any Scripture before We revealed this one to you; you never wrote one down with your hand (29:48). In other words, Prophet Muhammad, who was known to be illiterate, neither read any previous scriptures nor wrote the Quran.

Now please reply to my question.

Please provide a quotation from the New Testament in which God says that he inspired the New Testament. Not someone else making that claim.

Still somewhat ambiguous (isn't "scripture" by definition something that is written. Maybe the statement is taken as prophetic in nature: God told Mohammed, Mohammed recited it - it (eventually) became scripture.

Okay. Thanks, I think I understand the Islamic position now.

I wonder if the other holy books are similar or if they make more explicit claims

I should think the first requirement of being a divinely inspired book is that the CLAIM to be a divinely inspired can be found in the book.

My understanding is that very few "holy books" outside of the bible, explicitly state they contain the throughts of God.
Quran 53:5 "He has been taught (this Qur'an) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]."

Or is your next move to insist that it had to be God himself?

So far at the most we have The Quran, I hazard a guess that not many of the other so called "holy books" make direct claim to containing the thoughts of God.

I'll stand corrected if someone provides a reference for me.

Why does it matter?
For example, if you were inventing a religion, would you not claim that god was behind at least it or its holy book?

If I wanted to be taken seriously, I would. Therefore I don't understand why this is pertinent or being considered?

Humans say all sorts of things. Now on the other hand, if I ever read another holy book again, and the words themselves seemed beyond human imagination, now that would mean something to me. The Bible is not such a book though. Far too human to be considered to be from a god.
