The first Monotheist?
Post #1 My theological positions:
-God created us in His image, not the other way around.
-The Bible is redeemed by it's good parts.
-Pure monotheism, simple repentance.
-YHVH is LORD
-The real Jesus is not God, the real YHVH is not a monster.
-Eternal life is a gift from the Living God.
-Keep the Commandments, keep your salvation.
-I have accepted YHVH as my Heavenly Father, LORD and Savior.
I am inspired by Jesus to worship none but YHVH, and to serve only Him.

Exactly. And what culture is going to refer to their God with a lowercase "g".SallyF wrote: Innumerable versions of "God" were imagined before anyone imagined the brutal, pagan Yahweh.

It's just like with everything else with these Abrahamic religions. They act like they were the first to think of everything, when in reality their entire theology is a hodgepodge of previous Pagan beliefs. Not the least of which was a "virgin born" Son of God. That idea was old-hat long before the days of Jesus.

That's what the OP seeks to determine. Where is the origin of Monotheism? With whom? The "Abrahamic religions" may claim the honor, (and what was the first Abrahamic religion now...?) but it is doubtful that is the case, given the examples already discussed.Divine Insight wrote:

Any others we haven't mentioned?

Re: The first Monotheist?
Post #13"They call him Indra, Mitra, Varuna, Agni / and he is heavenly nobly-winged Garutman.Elijah John wrote: So are you equating monotheism with intolerance? Is that necessarily so? What if there is actually one, universal God known by different names? And worshiped with different rituals.
To what is One, sages give many a title / they call it Agni, Yama, Matarisvan."
– Rigveda 1.164.46 (c. 1500-1200 BCE)
If he existed Abraham would have lived before any of these other examples. But with only a few centuries gap either way it doesn't seem particularly likely to me that Indian/Iranian monotheism and Canaanite/Egyptian monotheism would have depended on each other for their existence, whichever came first.Elijah John wrote: That's what the OP seeks to determine. Zoroastrianism has roots dating back to the second millennium BCE, that is before the Bible even says the world was created.

That must be embarrassing.
But I don't see any way around it.
