If you take the bible literally, then most people are going to hell. If this is true, many of your friends may be heading for hell. Permanent torture is the most hideous thing imaginable.
Are you begging them and doing whatever is possible can to keep out of hell?
Keep your friends from going to hell!

Achilles, I am impressed. This is very thoughtful and personal - which is what I value.
Do you feel panicked in any way from time to time that so many people around you - many whom you love deeply - are going to suffer eternal torment?
I have watched several family members die extremely painful deaths. The last one was my mother in law about 2 years ago. She died of diabetes and heart failure but was in the hospital for months leading up to her death - a stay that included 2 heart surgeries and an amputated leg.
I was with her when she died at 2 am after many hours of cradling her head in my arms and talking to her. I could not lie and tell her about heaven and hell or the tooth fairy or Santa. Instead, I soothed her by telling her of the lives she touched, the love she gave, the stories my wife told me of her youth, her children, as well as death as a natural part of life.
If I thought this woman was going straight to hell in order to suffer more pain than she was already suffering - which is certainly what hell is - I think I would be an emotional mess and end running down the street begging everyone to please, please become Christian or you are doomed! I mean, I would be seriously screwed up.
Perhaps I am just not strong enough to be Christian - I am a bleeding heart when it comes to the torment and suffering of others. Perhaps I need to get rid of some of my empathy.....

On the contrary, I think you would make a vey good christian. You also make a good atheist. Poor atheists (and Christians alike) care more for themselves than they do for others. The are close minded to new thoughts, their eyes are closed to the truths to be found on this earth (both good and evil), and their ears are close both to the cries of their fellow men and to the words of wisdom spoken by so many for so long.Cmass wrote:Achilles, I am impressed. When it comes to hell and my family, I have actually given it a lot of thought. Because I have a daughter . . . Ohh wait. . .
there is a perfect song about this exact thing on the radio RIGHT NOW!

A perfect description of Christians!!! vs christians.
Anyway, because I have a daughter and the world is as difficult as it is, I have given thought to what I would do if she rejected faith. My sister has also rejected the faith. My mother (devout christian) is praying really hard. Interestingly she had a "vision" of me when I was rejecting faith. While I was agnostic and questioning everything she had a vision of me with a leash around my neck. It gave her good peace and look what happened. . .
I think I would pray hard and do my absolute best to raise my daughter the way I find to be right. Proverbs says "
This is something I would hang on to because ultimatly my daughter's destination is her Choice. If God wont break free will to force her into heaven, what chance do I have of forcing her?6 Train [a] a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.
It is a first class human tragedy that people of the earth who claim to believe in the message of Jesus, whom they describe as the Prince of Peace, show little of that belief in actual practice.

I praise your strength. I lack it. I hate to say it, but if my children go to hell because of their lack of understanding (such as mine is), the I willingly will follow. I would never allow my friends or family endure that which I wouldn't. This of course barring my children grow up to be mass murders, etc etc... If a god should exist and refuses to clarify for those of us who don't understand, then send us to this "hell" however it should exist, then I would rather spend it with a million murders than with one christian who knew the way to this god and refused to enlighten the rest. I already know what your going to say, about confess etc etc etc,,,, and I will once again give the rebuttal "I have done all asked of me for over 5 years, and have gotten nothing but rejection, confusion, and lost" so spare me that speech. But of the friends that I know and the family I know, they are good people who do what they can to help others and do the least amount of harm needed. If they aren't worthy of heaven because of this god they don't understand, then neither am I and I would consider it an honor to spend eternity in hell with them. That to me is true friendship and family.achilles12604 wrote:On the contrary, I think you would make a vey good christian. You also make a good atheist.
