Is God great?

Post by marco »

WE often hear, usually after an atrocity, how great God is. People sing:

O LORD my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hand hath made;
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy pow'r throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

The tune is powerful but the words breathe superstition and silliness. This is an example of taking random bits and attributing their creation to some gigantic being. The invention is then adored and heartily sung about.

In what ways do we detect the greatness of God?
In what ways do we see God is NOT great?
Can we deduce anything about God being merciful, kind or loving?

Your post enforces my point, you see, I detect God while you do not.

That is not an accurate description of the situation. It's not that I don't detect god/gods, I detect that there is/are no god/gods.

Debate is pointless.
And yet here you are on a site titled "Debating Christianity and Religion" arguing your views.

Detecting God is a personal thing.
If I am right and there is/are no god/gods to detect, then you aren't detecting god/gods at all. You are experiencing some phenomenon you interpret to involve god/gods.

There is nothing could say except that for me God exists.
This isn't an argument for god/gods existence, but rather your belief. Your belief doesn't create actual god/gods, but rather simply defines the version of god/gods you hold to.

"as for me and my family God exists" this is written somewhere in the bible.
Not that I am aware of.

At the end of Joshua 24:15 we find this:

"But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

This is very different than your phrase. This speaker assumes God exists and will therefore serve it. He is not making a relativist claim that God exists for some but not for others.

Whether or not God exists is up to you.
Nope. Neither your belief nor my lack of belief has any bearing on whether or not god/gods exist.

To be clear: Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.

I must assume that knowing is better than not knowing, venturing than not venturing; and that magic and illusion, however rich, however alluring, ultimately weaken the human spirit.
