Water into Wine

Many Christians seem to consider the tale of Jesus magically turning water into wine to be a literally true story.

Yes. It happens everyday on a much slower scale.
If it “happens every day, then the magical trick attributed to Jesus in bible tales is nothing special, right?
Certainly it was "special," for it was quickly accomplished.
Now that you have committed yourself, I point out that water does NOT turn into wine.

Anyone can test the hypothesis. Put water in a bottle and wait for it to turn into wine. Notice that it does NOT do so.

However, if one puts fruit juices plus sugar plus yeast into a jar, keeps the temperature within a certain range, and prevents contamination, the yeast will convert sucrose and fructose into alcohol – and produce wine. It will not work with water alone.

I KNOW this – and have several gallons of wine in process right now. It takes about two weeks to produce acceptable wine at a cost of about a dollar per gallon. My most recent batch will be finished next Tuesday.
Questions for debate:

1) Is the story of Jesus magically turning water into wine LITERALLY true?

2) Does water actually turn into wine in real life?

3) Does anyone want a proven wine recipe and instructions?

No, but I can turn wine into water.

The Catholics are now making "Snackable" communion, perfect for the child's lunch box. Is the wine the actual blood and the wafer the actual flesh of Jesus? Is the Pope a cannibal? It depends on what one is willing to be believe. And some people seem to have the ability to believe just about anything they are told.

I was once a Roman Catholic. I believed that at consecration, the bread and wine were miraculously transformed into the body and blood of Jesus Christ, literally, but it retained the appearance of bread and wine.

The idea of spilling a single crumb or drop was horrifying to me. That was God the Son, through whom all things were made, and why we merely kneeled rather than fell flat face-down on the floor was a wonder.

Then we got a new priest, who was an alcoholic. He would consecrate the wine, as usual, but for his own personal consumption he would consecrate unfermented grape juice, as part of his treatment or whatever. He said, "Don't worry, this still works."

And I got to thinking, if he only drinks the wine after it becomes the blood of Our Lord, why is he using grape juice? Is the Church conceding that transubstantiation is a scam?

And then I got to thinking what percentage of the $20 I threw into the basket every week was going to pay jackpot payouts to sex abuse victims who won judgments in court.

Then the whole thing unraveled.

Last I checked, cannibalism was against the law. If Catholics are so dead set on saying that the wafer and wine are the body and blood of Jesus, how come cops don't descend on churches mid-mass and arrest everyone consuming them?

I knew a little old priest many years ago, an Irishman with the most delightful brogue. He sounded just like Darby O'Gill. He used to consume a pint of Jameson Irish Whisky every evening without fail. And was very unrepentant about it, insisting that nothing in "da good book" condemned the practice. I suspect that if he was ever face down on the floor he wasn't intentionally prostrating himself. Although to be honest, I never saw him drunk. His brogue would get heavier at times, however. I just can't picture Darby O'Gill as a child molester. But then, who would ever suspect their priest of being a child molester? Which is exactly why they were able to get away with it.

Pretty Much - and it wasn't Reunite either but a Château Briand Pommard.

Omnipotence would seem to entail the ability to do that. I trust your response is something like "Well that's just a silly idea."

Yes.
Zzyzx wrote:2) Does water actually turn into wine in real life?
No, which is the point of the story: telling of a miracle Jesus performed. Even 2,000 years ago it's unlikely anyone believed water could turn into wine on its own.

How can anyone know that these folks did not just mistake it for a simple magic trick?
