WORKS

The apostle Paul, at Romans 4:6 was primarily referring to "works of law," the Law of Moses, given at Mt. Sinai. (Romans 3:21,28). It seems that in Paul's day some Jewish Christians were having a hard time accepting that the Mosaic Law and the works required by that Law had been done away with. Consequently, Paul pointed to Abraham's example to prove that a righteous standing with God does not result from "works of law." It comes from faith. That's encouraging because knowing this gives us confidence that a good standing with God is within our reach. It means that we can develop faith in God and in Christ, which can actually lead to divine approval.

On the other hand, the "works" discussed in James chapter 2 are not the "works of law" mentioned by Paul. James is referring to the works, or activities, that Christians do in their daily life. (James 2:24) Such works indicate whether a Christian has genuine faith in God or not.

Is it clear that the works that Paul mentioned in Romans are different from the works in our daily lives? Wouldn't such works as James referred to show that we have faith?

"...I will show thee my faith by my works." (James 2:18b, KJV)

Is this topic too complicated for inquiring minds? I would love to hear peoples' thoughts on this thread, which delineates between the works of the Law and the works of our everyday lives as James brought out.

I believe they are the same works apostle Paul and James speaks about. Good works by abiding the law, the result of faith.
James 2:24, not by a cold, abstract, inoperative faith. It must be by a faith that shall produce good works, and whose existence will be shown to men by good works. As justification takes place in the sight of God, it is by faith, for he sees that the faith is genuine, and that it will produce good works.

Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
Eph 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
Rom 4:6 even as Dawiḏ also says of the blessedness of the man to whom Elohim reckons righteousness without works:
Rom 3:21 But now, apart from the Torah, a righteousness of Elohim has been revealed, being witnessed by the Torah and the Prophets,
Rom 3:28 For we reckon that a man is declared right by belief without works of Torah.
Jas 2:18 But someone might say, “You have belief, and I have works.” Show me your belief without your works, and I shall show you my belief by my works.

I have understood that the point Jesus and Paul makes is, person doesn't become righteous by doing something. And the reason is, the actions are only the result, like fruits of a tree. A fruit doesn't make the tree what it is, it is the tree that makes the fruit. And the fruits tells what kind of tree one is. Also faith can be seen as a result, a fruit, not the cause. If person is righteous, it will become visible in his actions. And that means, he will be loyal (faithful) to God and he wants to do what is good and right, because he understands that it is good. Righteous actions indicates person is righteous, but the actions are only the result, not the cause.

Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit. A good tree can't produce evil fruit, nei-ther can a corrupt tree produce good fruit. Every tree that doesn't grow good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire. Therefore, by their fruits you will know them.
Matt. 7:17-20

So, essentially it is about what kind of person one is. If one is righteous, he will produce righteous actions. And I believe that is the reason why God saves those who are righteous, because He knows they will produce good fruit.

These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
Matt. 25:46
