So what would make a secular scientist believe in GOD?
Post #1Presented here, so that we may have a place to start is one biochemist's (Dr, Sy Garte) journey from staunch atheist to firm believer: So, why are you a believer, or what would you need to become a believer in some Creator GOD.

Post #91I don't want to be picky, but all scientists are secular in that they deal with...science. Which is a secular enterprise. And not in religious or spiritual matters. So the question becomes: What would make an atheist scientist believe in God?LittleNipper wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 9:53 am Presented here, so that we may have a place to start is one biochemist's (Dr, Sy Garte) journey from staunch atheist to firm believer:
I guess that would be accepting the arguments for His existence.

Post #92Belief only comes when you accept the evidence for whatever it is you end up believing in. There's no evidence for 'Not God'. Only evidence for 'God'. So I either accept the evidence for God or I don't. There is then either a belief in God's existence or a lack of belief. There is no such thing as a belief in His non-existence. Because there's no evidence for that.LittleNipper wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2023 3:21 pm
Your belief that there is no GOD comes with terrible consequences.
I can't force myself to accept that which I reject. I can't force myself to believe. Unless God wants me to lie to myself and to Him? I guess not, so He'll have to accept the situation. There's nothing I can do to change it and He doesn't seem interested in changing it for me.

Post #93Oh, most definitely seconded. It's a real pain scrolling down through umpteen lines of text from half a dozen people to get to a single line response.

Post #95What's He going to look like? Big guy, beard, long white cloak? If evolution had taken a different turn way back when and we were all evolved from horses (Equus sapien?), then guess what God would look like.fredonly wrote: ↑Mon Aug 26, 2024 4:54 pm I neglected to answer the question: "what would you need to become a believer in some Creator GOD". I'm open to convincing evidence and argument, but I'm pretty sure I've already encountered the best there is - and nothing has come close. So realistically, I'd need the creator-God to clearly expose itself to me.

Post #96And apologies if my responses have dragged y'all back into an old thread. I just saw that the last response was quite recent, but now have noticed that it kicked off quite some time ago.
So...as you were.

Post #97What on earth is evidence?
Evidence means facts, signs, or information that give a reason to believe something is true or that an event happened.
Therefore, if I'm convinced that a thing is real/true, then I will accept said thing as being real/true as I also assume you would.
In regards to all powerful and/or all knowing gods, I'll copy this from post 90.
Paraphrasing: If a god exists, such a being will absolutely know what evidence is required to convince me of its existence. The fact that I'm currently unconvinced means the god either doesn't want me to believe it exists, doesn't care if I believe it exists, or doesn't exist.
You can give a man a fish and he will be fed for a day, or you can teach a man to pray for fish and he will starve to death.

If you are unable to demonstrate that what you believe is true and you absolve yourself of the burden of proof, then what is the purpose of your arguments? - brunumb

Post #98The same it would take for any other person: Faith. There is no way to prove God, so you need to believe first in something (axiom) then you can create knowledge on top of that belief.
Atheism doesnt make any logical sense tho.
