The eternal soul

Post by bernee51 »

I am happy to be corrected but I am of the understanding the those who profess a christian religion based belief in the soul hold that our actions here in this life determine the fate of said soul for all eternity. Now 'eternity' doesn't start when we are born - eternity is time without beginning or end; infinite time.

IOW souls, all souls, of all those born and yet to be born (in theory an infinite number) have been around as long as god - i.e. eternity.

According to at least one poster on this forum my soul in the 'afterlife' is destined for hell and his to rest in the loving light of his god - for all eternity.

Where was my soul (and gazillions of others) before I was born?

And I note that with this post I have officially moved to guru status

The syllable gu means shadows
The syllable ru, he who disperses them,
Because of the power to disperse darkness
the guru is thus named.

Advayataraka Upanishad 14--18, verse 5)
"Whatever you are totally ignorant of, assert to be the explanation of everything else"

William James quoting Dr. Hodgson

"When I see I am nothing, that is wisdom. When I see I am everything, that is love. My life is a movement between these two."

A Ray

In mathematics a line has no end, it is an abstraction which goes for eternity in two directions. A line segment is a section of a line with two ends. A ray is between. It has one end but not an other end. I always thought that is analogous to what most of the christians mean by an eternal soul. A beginning and no end. It is not logically impossible.

Christians and Jews alike believe that God made human in his own likeness and image. So our soul would come from God who has no begining correct?

Right. Another paradox for the christian apologists to have to deal with.
If god made humans in his own image, does that mean that human souls are eternal (no beginning and no end)? If not, then our souls are not really in god's image. If so, then why is there virtually no biblical reference to human's pre-incorporeal soul and lots of biblical references to the soul after death.

The Bible says God "knews us even in our mothers womb (that is why we fight abortions). So God knows each of us individually before we draw our first breath.

According to the bible when does the soul come into the foetus? Where was the soul before it comes into the foetus?

But that really does not answer if he knew you before that. Is there any biblical reference to human souls existing before the existence of human bodies to house them?

Does god have a big jar of pre-existing eternal human souls to implant into each foetus? Or does he implant the soul into a zygote? Is there a finite supply of unused human souls? Will the world end when they run out? Will there be any left over? Does god re-use some of these souls? If they are with god before incarnation, then why would god put them into human bodies knowing that a large proportion of them will be lost to him?
