Many who do not appear to have much knowledge of biology seem indignant when learning that H. sapiens are classified as animals (alternatives being plant and virus). I do not recall ever hearing a Non-Theist object. 1) Is there something about religion that causes this?

You see I am NOT an animal, never was and never in a billion years will I evolve to be one, my family tree all the way back to Adam don't have one ape in it.

2) Why be upset, indignant or in denial about a biological / taxonomic classification?

3) Since humans differ from other animals only in degree (some mental and physical characteristics), what is the objection to recognizing that they are animals?

4) Is anything other than religion (and possibly narcissism) involved?


In the quoted statement someone (whose theological position apparently defies description) claims knowledge of his family tree back to Adam – as though that proves the claimant is not an animal. However, if the hypothetical Adam was human (H. sapiens), he (Adam) classifies as an animal.

Scientists describe virtually everything that is alive as animal or plant. So, if you’re not a plant then you are an animal!

If man has no preeminence over the animals, then we would have to be equal to or less than the animals.

In Biblical “Classification humans is created separately from animals as image of God. It makes human different than animal.

That I think is the reason for not accepting to be animal. However it is totally different think and matter of belief does person accept Biblical classification.

I don’t see why person should accept modern biological classification, even if there are similarities in physical structure.

I don't mind scientific classifications, it is a name given to a group of living things that are alike. It certainly doesn't take away from who I am because I am in the same classification as a goat or sheep. As Christians, our identity does not come from man, but from God, would you agree?

There is a huge difference in being classified as an animal, and evolving from one (which I have a hard time swallowing).

I don't see how man is an animal from this Bible quote? Both from the dust yes, have the breath of life, yes, go back to dust, yes, but man is not this flesh, this is a tent. Who we really are is the spirit/mind in this body of flesh, which is from God. Sure God Spirit gives life to the animals too, and the plants, but they don't have that 'image' or likeness of our Creator like we do.

The whole idea of the Evolution theory is to ignore Gods Spirit in man, his mind and make him think that all he is, is the flesh, in which case he is not much different then the animals. Once the mind/spirit of man is reduced to the brain, then like all animals man also acts on instinct, and this free will is nothing but an imaginary impulse created by millions of years of evolution accumulated in the brain.

So if man is just an animal, who then is this God?
That's right, then God is just the imagination of the brain, and the Evolution religion wins, it has succeeded in deceiving man that there is no Creator other than the created.
