Biblical Contradictions

Where do you draw the line on Biblical inerrancy?

There are minor errors of fact and detail which do not alter the material truth or meaning of the text in any way - IE 200 and 2000 is not important as it could easily be a copy error

There are significant variations in the stories and records, none of which are fully accurate, but all of which contain historical truth along with the errors.

There is a vast mix of styles and sources, layered and re-layered over time reflecting traditions and stories relating to the Hebrew people and their God. But, based on independent archeological evidence and literary records, some of it could be possible

It's all a fairy tale, but in its message--sometimes scary, sometimes inspiring. Sometimes looney, sometimes profound. Sometimes outrageously wrong. Sometimes stunningly correct.

The bible is so full of bogus errors that we can nt be sure that there even was any of the people, places or events that it records

Biblical Contradictions

Post by achilles12604 »

Ok. I looked over the last few pages of topics and I couldn't find one dedicated to this discussion (much to my surprise). Therefore I am starting it.

What are the biblical contradictions which the atheists keep refering to and what are the answers by apologists.

Ready, set . . . GO!

Again, by what authority do you posit the government above religion?

By your pronouncement?

You just gave me the same argument I just said you gave. Are you listening or are here to repeat your dogma?
You are assuming that government has authority over what you believe. That is not true. You can worship in any way that does not violate teh law (such as human sacrifices).

What is being restricted is if a church claims tax exempt status, they are not allowed to endorse a specific candidate. However, if they wish to forego that tax exampt status, they may do so.

That is not just churches that have to follow that rule. Any organization that is tax exempt can not endorse a specific candidate. They may endorse a specific policy, and many churches do so.

Therefore, your claim that the government is 'endorsing atheism' is totally ridiculous. You may repeat your dogma and your complaints, but it sounds to me you just want to complain without facts.

At least we know the book fell from the sky. From where does this "logic" orginate from exactly? And oddly enough most of humanity obeys those substandard ramblings in the old book (without having read it). The "logic" you claim is in that old book. So...? And what is outdated, unclear, and substandard about "don't steal, don't murder, don't lie..."??

If there is a "constitutional" law separating church and state
Behold, the 1st ammendment to the Constitution of the United States of America:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

It is known as the 'separation clause', or as George Mason (the author) coined it, "separation of church and state".

Just as the issue of Bible contradictions, this particular subject is not up for debate. FYI.

Interestingly, I wonder what the for fathers view of the 1963 (1962?) ruling against the ten commandments would be . . .

This seems like it is exactly what they said should not happen, yet because someone somewhere inserted their own opinions, it happened.

This seems to go against
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof
Doesn't it?
It is a first class human tragedy that people of the earth who claim to believe in the message of Jesus, whom they describe as the Prince of Peace, show little of that belief in actual practice.

Some modern interpretations of it are. It's obvious from the following that the mention of God / Christ, and the holding of church serves was commonplace in government facilities, etc.

Reserved Seats at Capitol Services

Here is a description, by an early Washington "insider," Margaret Bayard Smith (1778-1844), a writer and social critic and wife of Samuel Harrison Smith, publisher of the National Intelligencer, of Jefferson's attendance at church services in the House of Representatives: "Jefferson during his whole administration was a most regular attendant. The seat he chose the first day sabbath, and the adjoining one, which his private secretary occupied, were ever afterwards by the courtesy of the congregation, left for him."

The Old House of Representatives

Church services were held in what is now called Statuary Hall from 1807 to 1857. The first services in the Capitol, held when the government moved to Washington in the fall of 1800, were conducted in the "hall" of the House in the north wing of the building. In 1801 the House moved to temporary quarters in the south wing, called the "Oven," which it vacated in 1804, returning to the north wing for three years. Services were conducted in the House until after the Civil War. The Speaker's podium was used as the preacher's pulpit.

A Millennialist Sermon Preached in Congress

This sermon on the millennium was preached by the Baltimore Swedenborgian minister, John Hargrove (1750-1839) in the House of Representatives. One of the earliest millennialist sermons preached before Congress was offered on July 4, 1801, by the Reverend David Austin (1759-1831), who at the time considered himself "struck in prophesy under the style of the Joshua of the American Temple." Having proclaimed to his Congressional audience the imminence of the Second Coming of Christ, Austin took up a collection on the floor of the House to support services at "Lady Washington's Chapel" in a nearby hotel where he was teaching that "the seed of the Millennial estate is found in the backbone of the American Revolution."

First Catholic Sermon in the House

On January 8, 1826, Bishop John England (1786-1842) of Charleston, South Carolina, became the first Catholic clergyman to preach in the House of Representatives. The overflow audience included President John Quincy Adams, whose July 4, 1821, speech England rebutted in his sermon.

Woman Preacher in the House (and call for revival!)

In 1827, Harriet Livermore (1788-1868), the daughter and granddaughter of Congressmen, became the second woman to preach in the House of Representatives. The first woman to preach before the House (and probably the first woman to speak officially in Congress under any circumstances) was the English evangelist, Dorothy Ripley (1767-1832), who conducted a service on January 12, 1806. Jefferson and Vice President Aaron Burr were among those in a "crowded audience." Sizing up the congregation, Ripley concluded that "very few" had been born again and broke into an urgent, camp meeting style exhortation, insisting that "Christ's Body was the Bread of Life and His Blood the drink of the righteous."

Communion Service in the Treasury Building

Manasseh Cutler here describes a four-hour communion service in the Treasury Building, conducted by a Presbyterian minister, the Reverend James Laurie: "Attended worship at the Treasury. Mr. Laurie alone. Sacrament. Full assembly. Three tables; service very solemn; nearly four hours."

Adams's Description of a Church Service in the Supreme Court

John Quincy Adams here describes the Reverend James Laurie, pastor of a Presbyterian Church that had settled into the Treasury Building, preaching to an overflow audience in the Supreme Court Chamber, which in 1806 was located on the ground floor of the Capitol.

The Old Supreme Court Chamber

Description of church services in the Supreme Court chamber by Manasseh Cutler (1804) and John Quincy Adams (1806) indicate that services were held in the Court soon after the government moved to Washington in 1800.

Church Services in Congress after the Civil War

Charles Boynton (1806-1883) was in 1867 chaplain of the House of Representatives and organizing pastor of the First Congregational Church in Washington, which was trying at that time to build its own sanctuary. In the meantime the church, as Boynton informed potential donors, was holding services "at the Hall of Representatives" where "the audience is the largest in town. . . .nearly 2000 assembled every Sabbath" for services, making the congregation in the House the "largest Protestant Sabbath audience then in the United States." The First Congregational Church met in the House from 1865 to 1868.

House of Representatives, After the Civil War

The House moved to its current location on the south side of the Capitol in 1857. It contained the "largest Protestant Sabbath audience" in the United States when the First Congregational Church of Washington held services there from 1865 to 1868.

May Peace be upon you all

Let’s be frank Christ as I believe a profit that was sent to Middle Eastern Jews, now correct me if im wrong but the true believers where mainly middle eastrens (Nasaras) , the Romans especially the emperors and the senate were enemies to Christ and Christianity though they had trade relations with the Jews.
The Jews plot a plan to murder the profit (as they did to many others) by presenting the holy profit to his foes (the Romans). After they did what they did the government was overwhelmed with the rate of conversion to Christianity. So they had to change their strategy (if you cant beat them join them) thus ensuring that instead of being blamed to have the blood of Christ on their hands ,they will control the future of Christianity and continue their conquests but only change the names of the gods.

Who gave the roman slayers the right to be head priests and did Christ ever say he was son of god or was it a roman style addition so that they would not be forced to worship one god as the holy teaching of the Christ Cleary stated.
In summary who gave the Vatican its power (opposite to Islam where the religion does not belong to one country i.e.: Mecca is a place of worship not control).
Who gave the west more power than the east (where all heavenly religions where sent to). If god wanted to enlighten the east more than the west then who gave the west the power to control the (eastern origin) religion of Christianity.
Then again who here is the true terrorist weren’t the catholic British and the orthodox French the reason of genocide of the Native Americans in North America. Weren’t the catholic Spain responsible of murdering the natives of South America and forcing them to accept Christianity or die hard? Then again what about world war one and two wasn’t it fought by the Christians.
Christianity’s follower are responsible for more deaths than any other religion(inhumanity) ,so tell me this what the difference between the Vatican and the pentagon they both are buildings in which the future of the rest of the world is decided, and the difference between bush and usama bin laden ?????.

DOUBLE STANDARDS!!!!!!!!!!!
ALL HUMANS ARE GOVERNED BY ONE LAW (HUMANITY)!!!!!!! :?

Looks like Atheism has a lock on unity and interpeting its own book.

Just curious, which book is that?

I think that I miss the relevance of this list. Are you trying to argue that since the atheists are not agreed upon everything therefore the Bible has no contradictions? Or that since the atheists are not agreed on their doctrine that it is OK that the Christians, with alleged divine guidance are also not agreed.

By the way, atheists do not have a particular book. These are not denominations, they are simply associations. You have shown no evidence of doctrinal divisions. I am sure that the Methodists in Iowa are not in any major doctrinal disagreement with the Methodists in Kent, so your listing of various atheistic organizations which seem only to be different based on geography, is an unfair comparison. However, the Methodists in Iowa do have doctrinal differences with the Baptists in Iowa. Even though they have the same divinely inspired book and Holy Spirit apparently to guide them.

Icarus, I'm not quite sure what that list is supposed to accomplish.

Athiesm has no "book". An athiest is simply one who does not believe in God. Beyond that central tenent, any particular athiest can believe absolutely anything he desires without contradicting the individual (and perhaps differing) beliefs of fellow athiests. Athiesm does not claim to be a divinely inspired religion with a strict code of supposedly perfect and concise laws. Therefore, what point is there to be made by pointing out that there is a great number and diversity of athiest organizations? There is no athiest Bible. They have nothing to misinterpret.

Christianity is intended to be a strict religion based upon the Bible, a book espousing a SINGLE truth, and claiming to possess a SINGLE code of laws. Any person violating these laws may not rightfully call himself a Christian.

And yet, millions and millions of people have managed to take this ONE book and it's SINGLE message and create litterally thousands of diverse, contradictory sub-religions. If the Bible were perfect, clear, and concise as you claim, how can there be any more than one type of Christian? How can people interpret the Bible any more than one way?

All of us with our heads on straight can agree that there are contradictions in the Bible that do not necessarily inhibit it's central message(e.g. 22 does not equal 24). However, I believe that the vast diversity of Christian denominations is evidence of a more signifigant series of Bible contradictions; those which undermine the very tenants of the faith.

Is baptism necissary for salvation?
Can one fall from grace?
Can faith alone save?
Under what pretenses is killing permittable?
Is it acceptable for a rich man to hoard his wealth?

Such are examples of questions which no two Christians seem to agree on. Is the Bible really clear enough regarding these important matters? If the Bible is a DIVINE text directly inspired by God, shouldn't scripture be a bit more understandable?
