Water into Wine

.
Many Christians seem to consider the tale of Jesus magically turning water into wine to be a literally true story.

From another thread:

Yes. It happens everyday on a much slower scale.
If it “happens every day, then the magical trick attributed to Jesus in bible tales is nothing special, right?
Certainly it was "special," for it was quickly accomplished.
Now that you have committed yourself, I point out that water does NOT turn into wine.

Anyone can test the hypothesis. Put water in a bottle and wait for it to turn into wine. Notice that it does NOT do so.

However, if one puts fruit juices plus sugar plus yeast into a jar, keeps the temperature within a certain range, and prevents contamination, the yeast will convert sucrose and fructose into alcohol – and produce wine. It will not work with water alone.

I KNOW this – and have several gallons of wine in process right now. It takes about two weeks to produce acceptable wine at a cost of about a dollar per gallon. My most recent batch will be finished next Tuesday.
Questions for debate:

1) Is the story of Jesus magically turning water into wine LITERALLY true?

2) Does water actually turn into wine in real life?

3) Does anyone want a proven wine recipe and instructions?

The water into wine trick / illusion was practiced by others of the era -- including Hero of Alexandria.

How can anyone know that these folks did not just mistake it for a simple magic trick?

Exactly. Certain people in this thread have expressed their belief that water did turn into wine, and all we have to believe that are written stories from anonymous authors. We're essentially being told that these people, whom no-one knows, were somehow not fooled by a trickster.
Well...I don't have enough 'faith' for that.

Does that video actually show miracles happening or is it just a guy talking for a half hour about his reasoning that jesus performed actual miracles all just by pointing to language in the Bible?

Thank you for posting a 30 min sermon that doesn't answer the question in any meaningful way. Aside from quoting scripture for 66.6% of the video it does bring up motives as a means of determining a "real" miracle from a fake one. That magicians and other illusionists perform fake miracles for money and/or fame.

I am not here to debate your videos. I am here to debate you perhaps you could actually answer the question posited.

Jesus goes to a wedding......

Gives a person a drink of water.......

Somebody identifies who he is and they are impressed with what they've heard about him.......says to another person, he gave me a glass of water, it was nice and refreshing.

Some else overheard the conversation in a crowd and thought the person said wine not water...

They mentioned that Jesus gave a person a really nice drink of wine........but someone else said they only saw Jesus giving out water.

Another person heard that and said.......I heard Jesus was giving out water and when people were drinking it they said it was wine.

Another person said that must be the case because he is known as a miracle worker by stories they have heard..

All this happens at the wedding celebration and by the end of the day the story is circulating that Jesus went to this wedding and turned all the water into wine.....

and that's the account told by the wedding guests to friends and family in just a day or two after the event...................give it months and years and imagine where you end up with such a tale.

And now its time to write down the life of this Jesus by an author decades later and 100s of miles from where this happened in a different language and they come to writing the part about the wedding Jesus was at and.............................

Well, now you know the rest of the story.

It happens in verbal information exchange among humans all the time..........and before you know it stories like this have a life of their own..

......especially when they circulate among those who want to believe it.

Its not a surprise all these God claims came at a time in history when you had no instant digital information documentation of anything.......

Now I may not have any of the exact dialog correct on this, but you can readily see by my example how such a crazy claim can become legit through the failure of verbal information exchange............

And with that I rest my case.

Moderator Intervention

Saying "read this book" or "watch this video" is NOT debate. Here one is expected and required to present their arguments, not simply suggest readings or viewings for others.

Well thank you for watching the video all the way through.

Yes money and fame are elements that are often present in "trickery" and "magic", two things lacking in the reports of jesus' miracles.
