If there is an afterlife

Post by pleinmont »

In the unlikely event of there being an afterlife what will it be like? Would we be the same people we are here on earth or totally different? If someone passes into the afterlife as a child, will they stay as such, not growing into an adult? If a person has a disability or illness will they continue to suffer from it?

What do others think?

I think that it is souls that are saved (or not) and not our bodies or minds.

Believer in reincarnation here. I believe that on death we will not be suddenly indoctrinated with knowledge. Our minds and our way of thinking will remain the same. A child, baby will evolve from that point. While a child wouldn't need to change appearance unless he wanted to, I would think a baby would need to. Since we are now spirits I don't think the disabilities would remain with us. Eventually we choose to go on another adventure either here on earth or on some other planet.
May all your naps be joyous occasions.

This is one of many, many things that the Jehovah/Jesus/Holy Ghost version of "God" gave no clear theology about when they inspired the "Word of God".

So Christian folks - in my experience - tend to just make stuff up

Image

Children are being "raptured" in this imaginary scenario

And we can imagine whatever we choose to imagine happens to them after that.

In the world of religion

Our imaginariness can become our reality - even if it's in total opposition to other imagined realities derived from the same "scriptural" source - or in total opposition to the laws of physics or in total opposition to plain old common sense.

The make-believe of gods and angels and devils and miracles can be comforting and frightening and absurd all at the same time.

And it's a wondrously entrapping addiction.

In my experience.
"God" … just whatever humans imagine it to be.

"Scripture" … just whatever humans write it to be.

One is alive or one is dead, there is nothing between the two states. It's one or the other, rather like being pregnant, the "after-pregnant" is another way of saying not pregnant anymore. The "after life" is another way of saying "not alive anymore"....commonly known as DEAD.

Which one was Samuel after the witch from Endor summoned him to talk to Saul? Call it what you want, but Samuel was pretty chatty for a guy that was DEAD.

Samuel was definitely dead. The witch however (and possible the demon pretending to be samuel) was alive.

Can the biblical narrator be confused by a demon?

The most significant things that orthodox Christians have said over the years about the afterlife (aka the age to come, eternal life, the new heavens and the new earth, etc.) is that it is different. It is not just this life longer. We are still ourselves, but we are also in a significant sense changed (1 Cor 15:51).

The Bible most often describes the afterlife by saying what is not there. There will be no sin or law or death or suffering. One possible explanation for this approach is that the afterlife is so different that it can only be explained by describing what will not be there.

Think of it this way: Imagine that you met a man who spent his entire life on frozen tundra. How would you explain a tropical beach to him? How do we explain warm sand to someone who has only known ice and snow? How do we explain a cool breeze to someone who has only known an icy blast? Most likely we would tell him what is not there. There is no cold or ice or bitter cold. So, perhaps, is the afterlife when compared to this life; explainable only by what is absent.

What ever it could be like, we should hope the option to cease existing at some point would be available to us.
