I have several "big posts" I'm working on right now, so the best I can do for the time being is reference you to chapter 8 of David Oderberg's book Real Essentialism.JoeyKnothead wrote: From Post 42 here:

Whatever it is, it is going to die according to the Bible:McCulloch wrote:Of course you cannot prove it. You cannot prove that you or I have a soul. I'll bet 1,000 tokens that you don't even know what a soul is. I certainly don't.Elijah John wrote:I can't prove it, but anyone who has loved a cat or a dog are convinced they have souls too.
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. (Ezekiel 18:4)
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:23)

Fear does seem to be a prime motivator, and tool of some Christians.dianaiad wrote: But then I can't prove,, empirically, that my children think I'm really neat, either, but I'm going to continue to believe they do until one of them risks my ire and tells me I'm not.

"I ain't got me no time to present it, 'cause here it is, I spent all my time explaining why I ain't got me no time to present it" is as poor an excuse as I've ever known.David the apologist wrote: I have several "big posts" I'm working on right now, so the best I can do for the time being is reference you to chapter 8 of David Oderberg's book Real Essentialism.
When I wish to convey the idea of conscience, I search long and hard for the right word and ultimately use the word conscience. When I wish to convey the idea of life, I search long and hard for the right word and ultimately use the word life. I still don't know what soul is.Yochanan wrote:We should probably start with a definition of what soul is.
For some people it's conscience or just life it depends.
You don't know what it is you are talking about, but you can describe its attributes and you have unsupported beliefs about about soul. Do you have a soul? How do you know? This outlines the ignostic problems with theology. No one really knows what they are talking about, yet the speak with certain conviction and faith.Elijah John wrote:Never claimed I could prove it, only that I believe it and also believe our furry friends have souls too.
Can't really define it, 'cept to say that I believe it is the eternal, invisible part of us. No wager necessary.
You seem to keep missing the point I have been trying to make. I said I BELIEVE we all have souls, never claimed to have proven it and have not made the point with "certain conviction" as you seem to be suggesting. And I was fairly non-specific as to what I BELIEVE are it's characteristics, namely the invisible eternal part of us.McCulloch wrote:When I wish to convey the idea of conscience, I search long and hard for the right word and ultimately use the word conscience. Dogs have conscience. Cats have life.

Only if you can demonstrate that this is what jesus had in mind when he said, "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."DanieltheDragon wrote: [yt][/yt]
