Could Islam be reformed?

Post by van »

There are so many supposed "misunderstanders" of Islam- the muslim terrorists that have been guided by the hateful and violent verses in the Quran and hadith.

Yet the Quran is supposed to be so straight forward???

So many Imam preaching hate, yet Islam is supposed to be about tolerance? What gives?

Islam is not a religion of peace, and the Quran when read correctly shows that clear as day.

- Chornologically the violent versus were written later then the peacful ones. thus you quote

2:256

"There is no compulsion in religion."

Yet the later book

9:5

"Then when the sacred months have passed , then kill the mushrikun (non-believers) wherever you find then, and capture them and besiege them, and prepare for them each and every ambush. but if they repent and perform As-Salat and give Zakat, then leave their way free. Verily, Allah is oft-forgiving Most Merciful."

When Muhammad was teaching in Mecca he was peaceful, but later on in Medina he was a brutal, blood thirsty warlord.

When Muhammad was weak, he apparently preached tolerance (in a limited way), but when he became stronger his true violent, intolerant nature and his endless lust for power were exposed for all to see.

It is doubtful that Islam can be reformed to any acceptable extent. Most Muslims will tell you that the Quran was dictated by Allah and is perfect. They are, by this very notion, fundamentalists - dogmatic and quite deluded. It's a small step from there to turn them into intolerant and violence-supporting religionists, considering the history of violence and intolerance of the "great example" (in the eyes of most Muslims I've encountered and as is written in the Quran) Muhammad.

Many Muslims seem not to know the less-than-charitable things Mohammed did (or perhaps they only pretend not to know?). Moreover, most Muslims don't read or speak Ancient arabic, and the Qur'an isn't supposed to be translated (though verse-by-verse commentaries are available). In other words, most Muslims are at the mercy of their Imams to tell them what the Qur'an says.

In the case of Islam, ignorance of Islamic history and scripture may be the best hope for reform.
