If All You Had Was a Bible…
Suppose you had never attended a church, never read a theology book, and had no religious background.
If someone handed you only a Bible and asked, “How does a person become a Christian?” what would you conclude from the New Testament alone?

The KJV is an English translation. It was not translated into other European languages in 1611. It has almost certainly not been translated into 800 languages. These are claims without any evidence.
You said I can purchase a King James Bible in every language. So I went to the KJV Store to look for one in Spanish. That site says this:
That is obviously correct.KJV Store wrote:
The KJV Store offers a wide range of KJV Bibles in a Spanish equivalent that are based on the Reina-Valera Spanish translation (also known as RVR). The Bibles we sell here are not direct Spanish translations of the KJV. This is because the genuine KJV itself does not exist in any other language in the modern world aside from English.
I simply do not understand this attitude that it doesn't matter whether the historical details are accurate or not. Your overarching claims about the KJV and the Catholic Church are deeply confused precisely because you are wrong about many, many historical details.
I appreciate the fact that it can be embarrassing to be chastised in public for making false claims. But I'm not interested in being told I'm right. I'm interested in you no longer spreading misinformation.placebofactor wrote: ↑Mon Jul 27, 2026 5:06 pm
Take your C for correcting me, and take your E for presenting your case like some sort of tyrant. My original comments were meant for today, and you had to drag your righteousness into the conversation. Hey everyone, Historia was right, and placibofactor was wrong.

1. When and how did the Almighty God command you to spread His words, and
2. When someone criticizes you based on the things you spread about God's words, to whom do you think the criticisms exactly fall, to you yourself, or to the Lord who commanded you to spread His words?

Grew up Catholic; grandparents came from Italy, so Catholicism was my introduction to God. But because Catholic Masses were held in Latin, I never understood a thing that was being said. Stopped going to church when I was about 14, got tired of saying 10 Hail Mary's and 10 Our Fathers every time I went to confession. I never owned a Bible until I began collecting books when married, but never opened one up until I was 40. The reason for collecting was that they were old Bibles, and people for hundreds of years kept the dates of births, weddings, and deaths, and also made interesting personal comments in them. It made for interesting reading.
From the moment I left the Catholic church in 1942 until I received a call in 1982 from my mother, I never went to church, read a Bible, or had any religious affiliations, "NONE!" BUT I did believe in God, but never knew who he was, because nobody ever spoke to me about him.
Joined the Marines, when discharged, went into professional Harness racing for the next 28 years. Married, 4 kids, divorced, never married again. My racing career became my life. One day I received a call from my Mother, hadn't seen her in 4 years. She said she had joined a church and was going to study the bible with them. Hmmm! I asked her if it was the church we attended when I was growing up, Saint Frances. She laughed and said no, it was the Jehovah's Witnesses.
I asked her, "What's a Jehovah?" She laughed and said it's God's name. I responded, "Okay." I had no idea who she was talking about until I went to a library and took out several books on the history of the Jehovah's Witnesses. That phone call and her words sparked something in me that made me want to know, "Who is Jesus Christ?" So, for one year, every day, with no outside help and a dozen old commentaries, concordances, and lexicons I had saved, saved to resell for a profit, I found out who Jesus Christ was. Never joined an organized church, but have studied with Jehovah's Witnesses, Baptists, Methodists, Independents, etc.
My question to each of them: if there is only one God and one truth, why so many different opinions? Well, 45 years later, here I am answering your question. I am just one of millions of little branding irons the Lord plucked out of the fire. He gave me a gift, and I am not ashamed of using it. I'm not a fence-walker, waffler, or timid little pisspot when it comes to the truth and defending the word. Too many preachers, not enough teachers. That's only a small part of my story; what's yours?

Thank you for sharing your story. It’s interesting and very similar to my own. Raised in Catholicism, went to Catholic school, left when I turned 16 and got married. I do give the nuns credit for my belief in God, which they instilled in me. My Mom, however, gets credit for my faith. She was a great role model. She was a strong believer in the power of prayer and taught her children to pray when the times got tough.
Anyway, to answer your question
The New Testament urges unity (Ephesians 4:4–6), but it also commands believers to contend for the faith (Jude 3) and to test doctrines (1 John 4:1). Unity is found by submitting to God’s revealed truth, not thinking every opinion is equally valid.

Historia, I hope you don’t mind my asking. Are you Catholic. No offense meant. I’m just trying to get a read on where you are coming from.
I worship with a congregation of the churches of Christ. I grew up in Catholicism. I left when I was 16 and got married. But I never stopped believing in God or His Son, Jesus, and I always had a great interest in the Bible. I’ve been studying it for almost 50 years, and still don’t have all the answers.

I worship with a congregation of the churches of Christ. I have no connection to LDS other than a few friends. I was raised in Catholicism, educated in parochial school but left when I was very young.
How about you? Who do you affiliate with?
Have a blessed day!

Re: If All You Had Was a Bible…
Post #79MissKate, thanks for responding. Who do I affiliate with? Hmmm! I have often asked myself the same question, "Phil, what affiliation or affiliations do you have with other Christians?" Let me begin with, "not many." I tell people that I have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, through his Holy Spirit. Since I have left the Catholic church, and see the techniques certain organizations use, not all, I have become wary of organized religion. Not wary of the people, but of the organizations themself.MissKate13 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 01, 2026 10:30 am [Replying to placebofactor in post #77]

Also, in my 89 years, I have heard a lot of words but see little behind the words. Just a lot of smooooth talk, but little action. Promises made, promises not kept. So, I stay home alone, speak to my neighbors about the Lord, have a website that I maintain daily, write new articles almost daily, then post them on my site. I also communicate over the internet with nice people like you, Tam, Bruise Leitter, Capbook, and a few others. I like reasonable people, people with a bit of common sense. I do not like bad people, or smart A----." Those who think they or their organization have all the answers, and nothing is up for discussion. I don't need these idiots in my life. Even at my age, I am still learning.
Life has been a boiling pot for me, a hammer to my pride, a lesson on how precious every life is, and how foolish it is to seek after fame and fortune. Rich or poor, the trophies remain in the closet, and all anyone will take with them when they die is what we have given to the Lord, or what we have stolen from him.

Phil, thank you for sharing that with me. I appreciate your honesty and humility, and I can understand why disappointments with people and organizations would make you cautious.
I especially appreciated what you said about still learning at 89. I hope I can always have that same attitude.
One thing I have learned is that people will always disappoint us because we are all imperfect. That is why I try to measure every teaching and every church by Scripture rather than by the failures of people.
I also believe the Lord intended Christians to encourage one another and work together as a family (Hebrews 10:24-25; Acts 2:42). No congregation is perfect, but I believe God designed the church to help us grow together rather than walk alone.
Thank you again for taking the time to tell me a little about your journey. I look forward to learning more about your thoughts as we continue talking.
Be blessed,
Kate
