The site's security certificate

Post by olavisjo »

I get this message a lot when I search the site with Google from a Chrome browser. It is not a problem for me, but people searching the web may be reluctant to join us with such a harsh greeting.

:warning: The site's security certificate is not trusted!
You attempted to reach debatingchristianity.com, but the server presented a certificate issued by an entity that is not trusted by your computer's operating system. This may mean that the server has generated its own security credentials, which Chrome cannot rely on for identity information, or an attacker may be trying to intercept your communications.
You should not proceed, especially if you have never seen this warning before for this site.

This only happens if you attempt to connect with https, as opposed to the general http. I gather this site is not set up for https anywhere, so connecting via https gives that sort of browser message and effectively defaults to http.

I checked google, and for me it only links to the site via http... Do you have the search terms that gave you https? It's always interesting to watch google vary by location.

I'd be all the happier if https is an option(or even default), but it presents its own set of problems, and web interactions with a public forum aren't generally a high-security lot.

Hmm, that is pretty strange...

I've never noticed a https connection here, but maybe there was/is one... Or maybe google is being strange.

Does anybody actually use SSL to access the forum? If not, I can disable it.

Does the forum have a valid SSL certificate?

I've never used it, but I never knew it was an option.

The site has a self-signed cert. (I'm too cheap to buy a real one.)

Unless someone complains otherwise, I'm going to redirect all HTTPS to HTTP to keep Google from indexing the site using SSL.
