Is Bible the word of god ?!

Post by mms20102 »

All Christians From the whole world consider the bible to be the main source of their religion

In this Debate I would like every one support their views and try to reply each point

Points to be discussed :

1- Which bible is the true bible
2- Criticism to the existence of bible
3- Who wrote the bible
4- Is bible the ultimate word of god

please try to follow points in order to have effective debate after having agreement among the majority we can move to the second point .

Try to respect each other opinion and don't repeat answers without a feasible evidence .. try to support your answer with sources like a book , lecture , or even a full debate to review others opinions

You want to debate whether the bible exists? Do you mean to say whether one version of the bible exists?

Clarification requested.

Well I've never heard that. I suppose if someone believe the scriptures had to "match" but I'm at a loss to understand what that means. I have heard people claim that the bible contains contradictions but never heard that because they believe that, the books do not actually exist as a "collection".

Thanks for your claification, it does help a little.

again brother I meant to say the old writing found from around the world didn't match . yet we still at the first point which bible to be considered the true bible or in other words which one are going to debate about as you know there are many versions of bible " for me I prefer that we take the RSV 1952 " as the main source
others may prefer another one so at this point we try to get to know which bible can satisfy the best

A tip for yourself, good sir. Please run your posts by a native English speaker, or someone who is more fluent in the language than yourself. Like Jehovah's Witness, I too did not understand what you meant by "Criticism to the existence of bible ". I mean no offense - if I was going to a French forum, I'd ask my French speaking best friend to translate for me.

Now, I voted "edited holy book" because that was the closest I could get. I don't believe it is an actual holy book, but the record is clear - the Bible has been edited numerous times. For a book to be a holy book in my eyes would require there to be a deity to give it that stamp of holiness, so to speak. Since I don't believe there are deities, there are no holy books, just what certain people believe are holy books.
1- Which bible is the true bible
I don't know, and I highly doubt that anyone alive today knows.
2- Criticism to the existence of bible
yet we still at the first point which bible to be considered the true bible or in other words which one are going to debate about
I prefer that we take the RSV 1952 " as the main source
Any particular reason why the Revised Standard Version? I don't have a preference myself, so I'm asking out of sheer curiosity here.
3- Who wrote the bible
Various anonymous authors. We can tie Paul to a few works, but last I checked, no-one really knows or can prove who wrote the vast majority of the Bible.
4- Is bible the ultimate word of god
No. I don't believe there is a god, so this automatically excludes any book being a word of a god.

I chose the RSV 1952 since its revised all Christian scholars and all Christian parties can agree to its component

For my English I don't really translate I just use my knowledge some times I put Arabic expressions that why it may not be understandable .
Of course I lack some education but I try my best

I don't think there is one, unless you could find the original copies of all the different manuscripts that were made part of the bible. Then you would still have to ensure we had accurate English translations.

2- Criticism to the existence of bible
Here are a list of my criticisms:
  • Many books written by many people with differing perspectives not consistent with each other.
God did not provide an already translated bible for all languages.
the bible contains blatant lies. Eg see next
Non-believers have perfectly good reasons why they don’t believe. It’s not as the bible says: that God’s existence is obvious and all are without excuse.
    the bible contains broken promises
    the bible contains contradictions
we cannot get a proper English translation of the bible. Should be easy for a God to provide us with one shouldn’t it?
the bible contains a lot of inaccurate science
    the bible contains unfulfilled prophecies.
the bible contains absurd stories that cannot possibly be true. (eg babies wrestling in their mother’s womb, men being swallowed by giant fish and surviving)
the bible illustrates a God with horrible morals which I just can't possibly believe would exist.
the bible is full of atrocities committed by this God
the bible can be used to defend any crazy belief you want.
the bible contains much out of touch and sometimes bad advice.
    the bible contains mythological creatures
    The bible God endorses slavery
The bible God sees women as possessions of men
the bible seems way too much like the word of ignorant man than the word of God
God’s ignorance of mankind. You would think our creator would understand us better.
God’s ignorance of the universe. You would think the creator would know how is own creations work!
the bible needs a branch of defence known as "apologetics" to justify it and cover up the above list of things.
The disciples faith was very weak considering they were rubbing shoulders with the so-called son of God.
I discovered the gospels were hearsay, not eye witness accounts.
I discovered the gospels were adapted to reach target audiences.
Paul was blatantly mistaken about so many things, but yet Christians still use a lot of his teachings.
Just-so stories. Particularly in the book of Genesis we see what are obviously “just so stories, not literal history. Yet Christians often take these stories as true!
mms20102 wrote: 3- Who wrote the bible
There were many different authors who wrote their material over a period of several hundred years. Some of it, eg the gospels and the book of Genesis were clearly hearsay as they were not written by people who were there to witness the events.
mms20102 wrote: 4- Is bible the ultimate word of god
I don't see how it could be. It looks too much like the work of ignorant man. See my list above.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.
