According to the King James Version of the Bible...

Post by POI »

According to the King James Version of the Bible, one can apparently dig brass? Is it possible to dig up brass? I don't think so... Before Christians go into apologetics-mode here, other Bible version(s) state "copper" and not "brass". Which is possible.

For debate: Why did the KJV get this wrong?

(Deuteronomy 8:9) A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.
In case anyone is wondering... The avatar quote states the following:

"I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness."

I think it is possible to dig up brass. According to the Wikipedia it is possible to find zinc-rich copper ores, which could be called brass.

The earliest brasses may have been natural alloys made by smelting zinc-rich copper ores.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass

By what I know, the original word can be translated both, copper or brass, which is why I don't see problem in this.

Is this somehow problem to you? Would you believe in God, if all the translations would have the same word?

You've proved the point. Brass is a man-made mixture of copper and zinc. It is not dug up. The KJV made an oopsy, as other versions instead use the word copper. Do you acknowledge that the KJV made a mistake here?

And it only matters to Biblical inerrantists; especially in regard to the ones beholden to the King James version. Are you one of them, or do you acknowledge error?

And no, if the KJV had got it right, it makes no difference to me personally.

Yes, brass is usually a mixture of copper and zinc. And the Wikipedia claims it is possible to find the mixture in nature. Do you claim Wikipedia is wrong, or do you admit you made a mistake here?

As stated in the OP, Christian apologetics-mode will definitely need to work overtime here. :approve:

Brass is a man-made product, produced by 'man', consisting of copper and zinc. (https://www.asm-recycling.co.uk/blog/wh ... inal%20use.):

Brass is a metal composed primarily of copper and zinc and is man-made. This means, unlike the other metals listed above, it isn’t extracted from an ore, but made from a combination of other metals. Copper is the main component, and brass is usually classified as a copper alloy. To make brass copper and zinc are heated in a furnace until molten, then it is poured into pipes and tubes to solidify. It can also sometimes be rolled into sheets, depending on its final use.

*************************************

In order to dig up brass, such man-made brass would have had to been dropped or buried by people prior to folks later digging it up. It is not a natural resource unearthed from the ground. If you read the chapter in context, it is clear 'God' is telling folks that he offers other natural resources for humans to live by. Below is a corrected version of (Deuteronomy 8:6-10), for reference (i.e.):

"6 Therefore keep the commandments of the Lord your God, by walking in his ways and by fearing him. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills, 8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9 a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine copper. 10 You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that he has given you."

You do not 'mine' brass. The KJV clearly made a mistake here, for which other versions later corrected, by replacing the word (brass) with (copper).

*************************************

And EVEN IF brass was a natural resource to 'dig up', the point is still missed. In the exact same passage, the KVJ mentions (brass), while other versions mention (copper). Which Bible version do you ignore????

This comment is irrelevant. As I stated prior, it only matters to the literalists who revere the KJV as THE absolute authority. Is this you? If yes, then you may want to find another version instead. If not, then just reconcile the error/mistake made in the KJV and keep it moving. :)

One of them cannot be true. An (either/or) proposition exists here:

A) The KJV stands, which is untruthful, as one does not "mine" for brass. Or...

B) Somehow, the KJV version was speaking about digging up man-made products, (even though the context of the chapter instead speaks about how God offers other natural resources), and the other Bible versions actually got it wrong, by instead mentioning copper and not brass.

I'd say it's option A), as you it cannot logically be both.

The Bible refers to a metal called "brass," which likely denotes bronze (a copper and tin alloy), not the modern zinc-copper alloy brass.https://www.google.com/search?q=do+bibl ... s-wiz-serp
Strong Concordance assigned the same number for both the "brass" and "copper" as H5178, which Bible lexicon one definition in 1c) copper (as value).
If somebody want it to be a contradiction, it could by the use of other definition but also can be regarded as not if we use the 1c) definition below.

This response is not doing your cause any favors. Bronze is also man-made, and cannot be 'mined'. Here is the bottom line... The KJV mentions 'brass', while other versions mention 'copper.' It's obvious the KJV messed up here, and other versions fixed it up. I explained this in the prior response to 1213, as verse(s) 6-10 explains how 'god' provides the land to provide.

1) Did the Bible mean brass (or) copper (or) bronze in Deuteronomy 8:9?.?.?.? You have to discard something.
2) Further, copper is "minable", while brass and bronze are not.

This is why the KJV is wrong. If you are a Bible inerrantist, this matters. If you are not, you may just accept the error, and keep it moving.

No Capbook. No one has to simply want for it to be a contradiction. Rather, it IS a contradiction, Case/point:

(KJV) 9 A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.

VS:

(NIV) 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills

Now please actually address post 7, rather than avoid it. (i.e.):

My responses belong to 1) brass - valued as copper as defined by Bible lexicon. I'll take it as the "Bible brass" it means copper.
