The Sabbath and Sports

Post by Danmark »

Parents who celebrate the Sabbath on Saturdays are threatening to sue school districts for having Friday night and Saturday sports events. The districts try to make reasonable accommodation, but it becomes a logistical nightmare, considering other families observe Sunday as their weekly holy day. There's an article about it in the Seattle Times, but I can't read it because it is against my religion to pay for online news. We all have to make sacrifices for our beliefs. :D
And that's the point of this post.
Isn't there an element of sacrifice in the observance of religious rituals?
If the religious adherent believes his and her beliefs are more important than participating in or attending a sports event, that is their choice.
Why should others, both secular and of different religions be forced to make the same choice?

The religious people are digging their own grave for their own religions. Precisely because of what you point out. They aren't satisfied with having "Freedom of Religion" but instead they want to be free to shove there religion down the throats of others.

The case with the county clerk Kim Davis demonstrates this extreme problem. People like her aren't happy being free to exercise their own religious beliefs, but instead they need to force their beliefs onto everyone else.

We can't have religions trumping government in the name of their Gods. That's never going to fly. So the more that religious people try to do this, the worse they make it for themselves and their religions. They need to wake-up to the fact that religions are nothing more than faith-based belief systems. Not to be shoved onto other people.

as it was once put to me. having a religion is like having a dick. It's great and you can do many things with it but slapping it in peoples faces is not okay.
