summa theologicia, do i really have to?

many arguements that i've had with the religious have always ended when the accuse me of not reading the summa. is it necessary to know this book in order to argue with the religious or do they use this as a way out knowing full well i've never read it and probably will not?

If the arguments are about the existence of God, here is a good description of the arguments used by Aquinas.
