Russian Ban of Jehovah's Witnesses

Post by JehovahsWitness »

Jehovah's Witneses in Russia a facing an imminent ban which would criminalize all of Jehovah's Witnessses in the country as "extremists". Jehovah's Witnesses worldwide are presently conducting a letter writing campaign to protest this injustice.
CLATIFICATION 2020: Since the ban of the Watchtower Society was eventually passed in April 2017 thread is specifically to discuss the actual charges mentioned in the State procesution papers and the subseqent arrests under the specific charges under Article 282.2 (1) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (RF Criminal Code) of EXTREMISM in Russia.

What is your opinion of this move? Should Jehovah's Witnesses be banned from meeting to pray, read their bibles and sing spiritual songs together?

Do you think such a move could be envisioned elsewhere?

If you are non-religious, would you welcome such measures as a move to ultimately eliminate organized religion?

As much as I loathe door-to-door salesmanship of religion, I think the way freedom of religion is protected in America has been the gold standard (maybe not so much today because of the growing tumor of school vouchers channeling money to religious oriented education).
Why is this a tumor? Why shouldn't people have the right to choose where their child goes to school? When they can't afford the better schools, vouchers allow them the opportunity they wouldn't have otherwise. When the better schools get the funding, then those schools are rewarded for providing a better education. People don't care if the school is religious. They just want their children to get the best education possible. These schools tend to provide a better product than their public counterparts. The best part is that you don't have to use your voucher at a religious school. You're free to send your kids to the public schools. What's wrong with freedom of choice?
There is no question that ALL religions (including cults) have benefitted from the protective cover of our Constitution. Whether someone wants to cut his testicles off, disembowel a goat or chase a comet is his privilege so long he does it on his own dime and not near any of the places I frequent.
I'm sure we could add forcibly removing babies from their mother's womb to that list as well, no? Given that the tax payer has to pay for that, there's really no reason to stop there.
With the erosion of separation church and state (as I mention above),
There is no erosion of the separation of church and state.
religions will claw and scrap until one claims domination -- then, lookout.
At the moment it looks as if that title is going to go to the politically correct crowd, but when they get to the point where they're aggressively calling for Inquisitions, the backlash is going to be horrendous.

Fair enough. This is a BBC report about the perecution of my brothers and sister in Russian.

Quite harrowing.

I would welcome a ban on the following religions:
JWs
Mormons
Scientology
That's a starter list - more may be added later ;)

I think they are all banned in North Korea and in communist China. How do you feel about the physical abuse of old people and pregnant women, and the documented torture and unlawful imprisonment without trial of people for praying in their own homes?

Do these cultures guarantee a trial for such crimes?

How I 'feel' about another's culture is immaterial to me in this conversation. (What do you think, would be a much better question, just FYI)
This thread isn't about torture but about banning religions, to which I answered.
EDIT
I find it 'odd' you seem to be more interested in the torture aspect than the banning of religions. Seems rather 'leading' to me. :?

If your own opinion is immaterial to you, I'm sure you will understand it being immaterial to others as well. Still, thanks for sharing and have a very pleasant weekend.
