Materialists are well aware that consciousness and/or subjective experience poses a problem to their worldview. Simply put, materialists have failed to provide a scientifically verifiable explanation as to how/why a physical brain gives rise to consciousness. I believe the problem goes deeper than that since there is a good reason to question the view that consciousness is physical to begin with.
While searching the web for different views on consciousness I came across a book called Consciousness: Confessions of a Romantic Reductionist by Dr. Christof Koch.
Just how does the physical component give rise to subjective experience? How can certain mental activity. like mental imagery and hallucinations, be characterized as physical?
Leading neuroscientist says consciousness is not reducible!!
