Teach Me Science

Post by DavidLeon »

What is the scientific method and how is it different than the way we teach and learn ourselves? If I were the inventor of the airplane wouldn't I be employing the methodology of science just as if I were learning how to change a flat tire or make a website? How would they be similar and how would they differ?

<chuckle>
Just trying to get my head around the gay cake. Humour aside, it boggles the mind to think that people seriously believe that good old Jehovah is going to sit in judgement of them for baking a cake for a gay couple. The absurdity of religious belief seems to know no bounds.
[Laughs] Well, it wasn't meant to be taken literally but refers to all manufacturers of gay food products. [Monty Python reference] It doesn't really matter if Jehovah is going to sit in judgement of gay cake makers. They shouldn't have to do it like they shouldn't have to make Nazi cakes etc.

Lots of things. The only thing all gods have in common is veneration. Because that's what a god is. Someone or something venerated. You can't insist that a God must allegedly be supernatural, creator, and having control over people's lives if that isn't the case.
You left out what those 'lots of things" are that distinguishes Jehovah from the ordinary gods. Just to be clear, is he the one that is the supernatural creator having control over people's lives?
He's one of them allegedly, but there are millions of Gods that don't have that in common. Aren't supernatural, aren't creators, and aren't in control over people's lives. Some exist, some don't. Some are mythological, some aren't, some are human, some are living today, some are common objects.

It's just a cake, not a weapon of mass destruction. Their objections are not founded on any logic or sense of righteousness, just pure bigotry.

Sticking with Jehovah, is he the one you worship as the supreme being? If so, why?

I for one am really interested in an answer as to what specifically distinguishes Jehovah from other gods.

Most god concepts provide humans with answers as to why we they here and what happens to them when they die. The Jehovah concepts is no different from where I sit, thus my asking.

It doesn't matter if it's just pure bigotry. Since when did freedom become a selective concept only afforded to those who appeal to popular consensus? If someone wants to be a bigot then let them be a bigot. Where and by whom is the line drawn? So you're going to say if you're a baker selling goods to the public you have to make a cake depicting genitalia. You have to make a cake depicting bestiality or child pornography. You have to make a cake with Nazi themes. You have to make a cake with an atheist theme. You have to make a cake with religious themes. Or, for that matter, you can't make a cake with any of those themes. It's nonsense.

You shouldn't have to make any cake you don't want to make. If the public doesn't like it then don't go to that bakery. That's how it's supposed to work. Not crazy people whining about their being offended due to their identity politics or victimization.

I'm going to introduce a new thread on why atheists and theists can't understand the simple god concept and word.

First of all, no. Most god concept don't do that and secondly it wouldn't matter if they did. It still isn't a definition or meaning, it isn't a requirement of being a god.

So, for some reason extremely few people in the world can do this, but you---a mere poster on debatingchristianity.com can. Well, I'm excited. Bring it on DavidLeon. We await your expertise, acumen, and instruction.

I'll take this as an admition that Jehovah is no different then the majority of god concepts out there, in that it, like the others, provides answers to its followers as to why they are here and what happens to them when they die.

If you were to ask the 1st 100 religious people you found on the street, virtually all of them would have a god concept that informs them as to why (or how) they are here and what happens to them when they die. You know this to be true as do I and those reading here.

That you stretch the meaning of 'god' into becoming nearly useless in debate is just a mechanism you have in place in order to protect your preconceived religious beliefs it would seem.

Person A: Makes an argument about a god concept.
You: "Well, since a toilet seat can be a god, I fail to understand your argument".
Meanwhile, the rest of us are following along without any issue.

An example from this thread:
"You could clarify the issue by indicating what distinguishes Jehovah from all of those other gods."
Your response was: "The only thing all gods have in common is veneration. Because that's what a god is. Someone or something venerated."

Rather than address the issue and help others understand, you chose once again to obfuscate the point. Now you have doubled down and are blaming the victims by accusing them of not having the ability to understand the simple god concept and word. The lack of substance in your replies is rather telling.

If being a god means providing people with answers to why they are here and what happens to them when they die wouldn't most atheists be gods?

What's do you and Jehovah have in common? You both think you know what is best for you. Does that make you God?

No. It would depend upon what street it was. China? No. Japan? No. Russia? No. You don't live in a bubble do you? If you ask that question to 100 religious people on the street the Buddhists, Confucianists, Shintoists, Taoists, as well as most of the Hinduists and Scientologists and some of the Jews wouldn't say that. The Christians and Muslims would. That may be the majority but they would also say there was a God, are you going to concede that point in accordance with their answer as well?

Wow. It really is a pity I can't speak my mind when I get responses like this. You want to come over to my forum and talk about this?

Just watch the thread I've started. Watch how it's done. Something like this, if I'm not mistaken:
