Machines and morality

Post by Inquirer »

Given that humans are believed to be mechanisms (albeit of great complexity) on what basis can we say that murder or torture is wrong? Why is destruction of a machine regarded as having no moral component yet destruction of a person is? Surely destroying any mechanism is the same irrepestective of the mechanism.

This really puts this thread to bed IMO and there is not much more to discuss.
Given the information in the video I posted, there appears to be a lot more discussion necessary...

I will post it again.
I listened to parts of that, and the core problem he raises is that of constraints and he says there are always constraints - it is here that I beg to differ.

Will is not the same as realize, desire is not the same as acheive.

I can think about what I want to think about, I can desire what I want to desire, that is what "will" is.

So arguing against free will on the basis of constraints is invalid.

Try it, are you constrained in what you choose to think about? if you think you are then share that, give me an example.

Right now I am thinking about gardening and greenhouses. Now I'm thinking about keyboard factories. Now I'm thinking about rotation, now punchbags, now walking my dogs...to identify an X that I am unable to think about is a self contradiction because I must think about it in order to claim I can't think about it - that's free will.

Listen to it all and you should discover therein that he covers the points you raise...

I don't have the time, if you/he can give me the elevator pitch...
