The Love Of Money Is Idol Worshipping

The love of money is idol worshipping in its most relevant and practical form. Money can replace God. Money can mimic God and give us (false) illusions of security, safety, love and happiness. We can begin to trust in money to the point of confusing it with God and loving it more than God.

Exodus 20:23 – Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.

This commandment is telling us not to make money, our God. This is idol worshipping.

Matthew 6:24-34 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

We make money into our God when we follow worldly principles and philosophies instead of biblical ones. Principles from the bible would actually cause us to give our money away and not to amass it.

We make money into our God when we seek after it instead of God. We spend our time and energy seeking this money because we lack faith that God will provide for us. We diligently look to money for security and not to God.

Matthew 6 continued….25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

In this verse, Jesus is explaining that life is about more than physical food and clothing. Our focus should be feeding on the word of God and clothing our spiritual body with righteousness (which is the words and teachings of Jesus). We should be caring about our spiritual life.

Our concern should not be on our physical lives here in the world which is short and will pass away. Why are we investing in something so temporary? If we put seeking and keeping the Holy Spirit in our lives our first and only priority, God will add all the things we need to us. He will provide for us as He promised.

My topic for debate focuses on the following scripture:

Luke 14:31-33 says: What king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32And if he is unable, he will send a delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace.

33In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.

We see from scripture that Jesus, the Apostles and the early church gave up all of their possessions in order to preach the gospel. This same commandment applies to Christians today.

The first time the disciples were called 'Christians' was in Antioch. This means that anyone who is a Christian is a disciple of Christ. Jesus states that we cannot be his disciple (a Christian) unless we give up everything.

Question: Why aren't Christians today following this requirement?

Because they're not real Christians
Because they don't care
Because they don't understand it properly
Because God isn't supply them with what the need

There's, potentially, all sorts of answers available.
Have a great, potentially godless, day!

I would guess that many of them consider the practical consequences of "giving up everything" and deem it not feasible or desirable. If you have obligations like children (who need food, clothes, an education and other things that require money), rent or a mortgage, an automobile to get to/from work and schools, etc., then you need a job or source of income (inheritance, etc.). Some people, despite being good Christians, may also want a better lifestyle, a nicer home, a meal at a good restaurant, or other things that make life more enjoyable than having nothing.

What do you actually mean by the word "everything"? I would think that the answer to your question hinges heavily on exactly what that word means in this context.

"Everything" means exactly that; money, possessions, hopes, dreams - all must be forfeit. The examples of this would be Jesus, the disciples and early church. We know for a fact that Peter had a family (wife, mother-in-law, etc) that he was responsible for. That is why the disciples were greatly astonished when Jesus said in Matthew 19:24 - “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”

26Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

27“Look,” Peter replied, “we have left everything to follow You. What then will there be for us?”

Finally Jesus assures them in verse 29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for the sake of My name will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.

Naturally, we all worry about things like our children, food, clothing and shelter and Jesus knew that. We fear that this is an impossible requirement. So in Matthew 6, Jesus addresses our fears.

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The greatest mistake we as followers of Christ make, is forgetting that God will add the things we need. Somehow we imagine that if we give up everything to preach the gospel, we will be left living in a cardboard box. But as we can see in the scriptures, Jesus and the disciples were provided for throughout their ministries. God knows us and he knows exactly what we need. It may not be everything we want - but he is faithful to provide for us!

I think the first step in moving towards this goal is to first actually admit to ourselves that this is the requirement/standard to be a disciple of Jesus. Whether any of us are following it is something we all must sincerely examine and repent from. Then ask God to enable us through his Holy Spirit to put our faith in Him into action. Once we have acknowledged our shortcomings, the Holy Spirit will be able to lead us through conviction towards this path.

We'll notice our financial decisions will be different. You'll realize that you don't really need another ________ or a new __________ or a bigger __________. Downsizing won't feel like a step back but rather a step forward into the Kingdom of Heaven.

When you realize the cost of discipleship is to give up everything, you'll also suddenly appreciate all that you have.

As Jesus said in Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
