As an atheist, I have a hard time understanding what a god might look like. Please help.

We can't say that of the universe. We know nothing of what preceded or caused it and indeed may not have been caused. All we know it that it began.
Something that has a beginning has to have had a cause.

We cannot define what the cause might be but we can agree there must have been one.

The only reason many choose to say "we can't say that of the universe" isn't because we actually can't but because all the crazy theists with their different ideas of GOD will jump up and down proclaiming that it was their idea of GOD who is responsible.

THAT is something "we can't say", but yes - we can indeed say that something must have caused it to begin.

Yes but I do not mean 'precede' in terms of time. I mean, logically, something must precede what is contingent or created. Things that are created must be created from something. You cannot have a bronze coin unless you have bronze. You can't have bronze unless you have tin and copper. The universe is made of something so that something must, logically precede the universe.
What we have is a 4-D natural universe. We have no idea how it came to be, which means it could have had a supernatural origin/cause.

God doesn't look like anything we can imagine. All we can say is the God is the embodiment of Truth, whether that Truth is conscious or not. The only two reasonable positions on God are agnostic atheist, and agnostic deist. For us in this universe without an interactive God, the only difference between the two is hope.

Before every contingent (created) thing, there is necessary existence. Interestingly we can say some things about it;

1. It is.
2. It has the capacity to evolve by acquiring properties.
3. It has vast creative potential including to ability to create consciousness and life.

I don't think it is 'crazy' for theists to acknowledge these things and conclude that necessary existence is deliberately evolving. Necessary existence is otherwise known as The Void; God before creation; the uncreated God.

"It" may be, but the American Way isn't!

I have heard many people say that
the United States was founded on the
principals of God or by God
or something along these lines.

One day I asked God
out right if this were true.

God replied to me:

" I have never started anything with freedom of speech.
To be of God every word must be in truth.
Only the devil and his children want the freedom to lie. "

~ The Lord God

The fruit of freedom of speech.
Lies and chaos.

Long long long long ago in America
there was a popular saying.

" Women and children should be seen not heard. "

I do not hear it no more.

Look at you.

NOW

How is that working out for you?

It's all relative.

My relative is an American mom.

She made apple pie.

QED.
