How to love God?

Make love our only desire
God is love. Therefore, to love God. is to make love, the only desire of our heart. Since, to love, is a choice; to love God is a choice. To love Him we must know Him and have true faith in Him. When we have true faith in Him, we will imitate Him. We will, therefore, passionately desire to empty our self completely and unconditionally in order to serve others. When we care for others without any string attached, it is out of pure love. Therefore, when we help others out of pure love it is done cheerfully; it is free of resentment; and it is untiring. In addition, when we help others out of love for God, the opportunity to help others itself is a reward to us; because to help others is our delight and heart’s desire. This is what God desires from us.

Would you cheerfully care for a Palestinian? Plenty of people consider them to be descended from the Amaleks, but God apparently is still at war with them:

Exodus 17:16
For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Love is the key. Love is fundamentally simple. Just as reality is, at root, fundamentally simple. Although particular subject matters are themselves complex, they radiate from a single spoke: love, which is both hard and easy at the same time.

We should definitely help others and ourselves. In doing this we participate more in divine life (agape) and align ourselves with that Reality which is our own true nature. Love, although it may take a multitude of shapes, is one in essence. It is this now, it is this moment. It is by loving that we delve deeper and deeper into the abyss of Love that is God.

Imagine someone helping a Nazi and then say that again with a straight face.

Even in total love, imagine it.

The old man with the blackened leg lay dying. He spoke with a German accent and many knew what war he had been in and how he had come by his many wounds. Only one young nurse would tend to him, and often he lied in his own filth until her shift. She would eagerly discard her fun afternoons and evenings to take another's shift without compensation, because she knew that only then could the old man have a full day wherein he was cared for.

When the day came that his wounds and ailments caught up to him, the old man said to the young girl, "My uniform, I would like to be buried in it." The young nurse asked him if he still believed in the ideals it stood for, and he said he did, and that he would fight for them again, and if the Fuhrer asked, he would force his old, frail body to get out of bed, and stand against the enemy once more, even if he could only be a distraction.

The young nurse shed a tear, and sent out her love toward his hate. It ruined her, and she lost her job, but the old man had his wish: He was buried in his uniform.
