Define "God"

Post by DTho »

In a single sentence (if possible), please provide your definition of the word/term/concept: "God."

For example, "A fictitious human construct," or "A being than which no greater being can be conceived," or "An egomaniacal creature capable of incomprehensible violence," or "Pure Love," or what-have-you.

(Please try to come up with your own definition rather than using one of my examples; thanks).

Again, the question asks for a definition only; not a definition and following tirade . . .

Yeah, that was kindof weak. I say you just go here and read the 1,000+ definitions.

I've found a great gathering of definitions of god from various viewpoints and religions at http://god-defined.com/

To summarize after eight pages:
  • The Supreme Being, A being than which no 'greater' being could possibly exist.
    • all-powerful, can do all things An entity in which nothing is more powerful. the ultimate BOSS.
    • omniscient, knows all things
    • omnipresent, is everywhere all the time, An entity that is infinite in scope, an immortal entity
  • The Creator. the maker of all things, Self-Existing Creator of all.
  • Any supernatural being greater than man and responsible in some way for the rule or operation of the world.
  • Unique, He alone is God There have never been any Gods before Him nor will there be any after Him, god is a singular being within its own kingdom which is called heaven
  • Trinity
  • A construct of Judeo-Christian myth., An entity that has revealed itself through the Bible and seeks to have a love relationship with humans. My definition of God is a creature that humans created to satisfy the answers to the questions that they could not answer. God is an additional complication of those imaginations that find no joy in a universe sufficient unto itself. God was created by our ancestors (hunter-gatherers) when they reached the instinct of governance ... laid rules to lead and concepted God based on myth, dreams and visions to provide authority for the regulations... then dogma just evolved with time.
  • God is existence/the universe/reality/the all/truth/being. God is. That is all. Nothing more, nothing less.
God is the "Am/Am-not". The Here and There. The Up and Down. The Left and Right. The Everything and Nothing. He who is - Being.
God is that,to which all things in existence are constituent.
The embodiment of absolute reality unimpeded by the
prism of human intellect; The Existence of existence.
  • God is ineffable, undefinable,
  • GOD = LOVE period.
  • God is a living god.
  • God is Energy
Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.
First Epistle to the Church of the Thessalonians
The truth will make you free.
Gospel of John

Per this thread, God may be thought of as "the necessary 'condition set' of Existence, Differentiation, and Relationality which must hold in order for anything at all to exist."

Not that this definition is highly congruent with the Christian concept of the "Triune God."

The Islamic concept of God is summed up really easy & short:
Say:
He is Allah, the One and Only!
Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;
He begetteth not nor is He begotten.
And there is none like unto Him.

(Holy Qur'an 112:1-4)
Anything that fits this description; we muslims believe in it.
Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" without being put to the test?
We have tested those before them, for GOD must distinguish those who are truthful, and He must expose the liars.

(Quran 29:2-3)
