Was Jesus crucified on the Passover, of earlier?

Post by polonius »

The question is whether the Sabbath which came the next day was a Saturday Sabbath or the Passover Sabbath or both. I believe that all the evidence is unanimous that Jesus was crucufied on the day before the Passover. Matthew confirms this, as in Matthew 27:62 he says that the day after the crucifixion was the "one after Preparation Day" (ie preparation day for the Passover.

And John has no Eucharist account at the last supper.

So, as you understand it to be, on what day of the week did he die, and on which day of the week did he rise?
Entombed on Wednesday just at sunset, rose Saturday... just at sunset

Mat_12:40  for, as Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, so shall the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

not from the time he died, from the time he was buried. Only sign.

Mat 12:39  And he answering said to them, 'A generation, evil and adulterous, doth seek a sign, and a sign shall not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet;
Mat 12:40  for, as Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, so shall the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

Sojournerofthearth,
re: "Mat 12:39 And he answering said to them, 'A generation, evil and adulterous, doth seek a sign, and a sign shall not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet..."

And yet Mark 8:12 says that a sign shall not be given.

Sojournerofthearth,

I don't see how your post #77 reconciles a 4th day of the week death with Luke 24:21. I wonder if you might elaborate?

And yet Mark 8:12 says that a sign shall not be given.
He was speaking to the Pharisees they were trying to tempt him. He said beware of the leaven of Pharisees and Sadducees.

Saying 3 days does not denote a weekday or night. It is a vague term such as in 3 days I will depart does not say what day or time of day does it?

Yahwehismywitness,
re: "He was speaking to the Pharisees..."

Yes, in both Matthew 12:40 and Mark 8:12. What is your point?

No, it doesn't. But what is your point with regard to my post #83?

He told them they would see no sign because they did not believe in him

Well, yeah, he said it in Mat 12:39... and a sigh shall not be given to it... but in Matthew he finished the whole sentence.
