Question for Bible readers .

Which translation do you prefer? More importantly, why do you favour that version?

I have usually used the New American Standard Bible. Probably the most important reason, is that was the version in use by most of the people around me. They were all strongly biblical literalists, as was I at the time. The NASB is one of the most literal of the modern translations. It took into account much of the evidence from as close to the original sources as could be found (so the translators claimed) and never sacrificed meaning for style. It's style is particularly wooden when read aloud, but it is a good translation for serious scholars. Or not, look what happened to me!

I like ye olde KJV, just because of the gravitas of the language it uses. All these newfangled modern Bibles just can't compete.

I like the New International and the New King James. Truth be told, I use HTML bible to read a few translations at once (doesn't have the New International, though), but I usually quote from New International or NKJ.

I agree, the KJV rocks! I've got a 'study version', which means that the apologetics are built right in. We do have a NIV lying around too and a "Precious Moments" NKJV ( ).
When I want to focus on translation specifics I use KJV with Strong's Dictionary and the Online Parallel Bible.

Well if you want the NIV in html let me know. I ripped the entire NIV a while back for a Bible Chat Bot I did for a friend. Wouldnt make more than an hour at most to convert it to html.

Thanks, but actually like McCulloch suggested, I can read the NIV using biblegateway.

If you use FireFox, there is an extension toolbar for it that works really well with the BibleGateway site. Allows for Searches and Browsing passages easily.
