Bar Mitzvah

What is the purpose of the Bar Mitzvah?

Is it just a "rite of passage" ritual or does it have some deeper religious significance?

Does it relate to the Covenant?

That's interesting. I didn't know it was connected with the giving of the law.

Do you have a reference for that?

Hello Bede,

Here is one link. You can find a lot more just by doing a web search on Shavuot.

Hi sleepyhead,

Thanks for the link.

"Shavuot specifically does NOT correspond directly to the day we received the Torah (which, according to the Talmud, was on the seventh of Sivan), but to the end of seven weekly cycles of spiritual growth evolving from our heightened sense of moral freedom (Passover)."

That's interesting because in the Catholic liturgical cycle Eastertide runs from Easter to Pentecost, in a similar way to the seven weekly cycles of spiritual growth from Passover to Shavout.
