Ash Wednesday

Post by ThatGirlAgain »

I have seen very few dirty faces in the street today. (Midtown Manhattan) The past couple of years there were more around here. :confused2: Maybe the new Archbishop (Cardinal now!) is enforcing the "got to go to Mass to get ashes" rule. (I would not know.)

Any practicing Catholics out there? Did you get your ashes today? Does your Church require you to attend Mass to get them?
Dogmatism and skepticism are both, in a sense, absolute philosophies; one is certain of knowing, the other of not knowing. What philosophy should dissipate is certainty, whether of knowledge or ignorance.

Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation.

It is a day to put carbon on your face and pretend that you are gonna give up something that you ultimately wont.

Shouldn't you be watching Spongebob or something?

I know this from observation, which is a good way to understand visual information. The ash you put on your forehead is made of carbon. The commitments you guys make only last until Easter.

Your comment was childish and dishonest.

That is not what I call intellectual.

How was it childish and dishonest? Please explain.

Ill break it down for you. The ash used to mark the foreheads of Catholics is made from reduced palm leaves via a chemical reaction called fire. This chemical reaction creates carbon. So that part is true.

Second, Catholics make a commitment, on Ash Wednesday, to abstain from a specific thing in their lives, i.e. chocolate, meat, alcohol, or whatever they decide. This is a commitment that they make for a specific period of time, until Easter. They then resume consumption of what they pledged to abstain from on Ash Wednesday.

You can also decide to not abstain from material things and instead devote yourself to prayer and fasting during the 46 day period.

Please tell me how this is childish and dishonest? Also please show me that it is unintelligent.

You are making a sweeping conclusion that you ultimately don't know whether this is true for all practicing Catholics --- ergo, childish and dishonest.
