Sex Education In School

.

My sex education in school was abysmal. It was 50 minutes of a single gym class (boys only of course), which consisted of boy anatomy vs girl anatomy, plus an almost incidental mention of the drawbacks of "playing around." Followed by, "Okay, times up. See you tomorrow on field B for touch football."

And crazy as it may seem, even today:

"Twenty-five states and the District of Columbia require school districts to notify parents that sexual or HIV education will be provided.
Five states require parental consent before a child can receive instruction.
Thirty-six states and the District of Columbia allow parents to opt-out on behalf of their children."

What about your sex education? Anything you feel should have been covered or offered, or you were just curious about?

I am arguing that I don't want precious school time wasted on sex education instead of science and maths.
Please keep in mind that while math and science are extremely important subjects, often they don't have much impact on a student's life after having left school. Whereas sex with all its trappings and issues impacts almost everyone, and for quite a few years.
School is supplementary to what I teach and is for specialising and depth that I can't go into or don't have time to go into on the topics I want my kid to learn about.
I'm curious. So you home school your kid with your own curriculum; English, math, science, history, geography, social studies, a foreign language, humanities, and personal development, but no sex ed?

I don't see how you reached that conclusion from my comments.

Do you really think that anyone in history needed sex ed? How did they reproduce before public schools?

Not surprisingly, you didn't answer Miles' questions.

Clearly, sex can have many other results than simply reproduction. Yes, in the past folks did so without formal education. In our present world doing so safely and responsibly requires a bit more knowledge. It's odd to see someone arguing that knowledge is a bad thing.

Yes, thank-you for the credit, assuming of course that "TCG" is the ID you are crediting to me, "Tcg."

You expressed your opinion about the facts I presented in post #4 and I presented mine. Yours expressed some "sad indictment on society", mine expressed the advancement based on leaving prudish attitudes behind.

I (not "TCG") did indeed introduce the topic of prudishness just as you "Wootah" introduced the topic of "sad indictment."

Is there some reason in this debate forum that you can express your opinion and I am at fault to express mine?

No one is arguing against knowledge ... /facepalm.

I stand corrected. Rather it is the dissemination of sexual knowledge you seem to be opposed to. Not sure what practical difference that makes, but there we have it.

It shouldn't be taught in schools, it should be taught in homes. But as we know, the common person isn't particularity smart these days (unless it's about the latest Tik Tok video or the like) so it falls to the schools (much like discipline).

So what do you suggest we do to inform those students growing up in homes where it's not competently taught? Should it still not be taught in schools?

It's not an easy fix. Right now, in the USA, sex isn't spoken about in most families freely outside of 'only in marriage' thanks, in large part, to the religious right and their inability to look past their own upturned noses.
Schools shouldn't be the first or most thorough teacher of sex ed. That should come from the homes.

In an ideal world perhaps, but, as I say, many if not most parents don't have the competency and/or inclination to teach it, which leaves it up to the next best resource, our schools.
