If you reproduce with another person, they become yourself inside the offspring.

Assuming they'd been nice to me, I'd still have loved them since they could 1) aid my survival to the point I can reproduce and 2) cut out the middle-man and make more of me themselves by giving me siblings. There's still that reproductive aspect.

I don't think love can be uncoupled from reproduction. Perhaps I misspoke a bit and now I have to backpedal because I don't think this absolutely has to mean mating.

But if I picture myself as an elderly person enjoying the company of another elderly person of the opposite sex who was once capable of reproducing and now no longer, that to me is mostly friendship, not love.

There are many definitions of love. A rather strong one is "an unconditional positive regard." Love for parents and children would certainly qualify. As you have pointed out, a desire to mate and reproduce with them doesn't.
