Getting Married
Post #1Is getting married a Christian thing to do or just something required of the State?

Re: Getting Married
Post #2Obviously those are not the only two options since other religions practice marriage also.
But, your fundamental question is a good one to debate. Why should people get married? What is the purpose of marriage?

Re: Getting Married
Post #3My question is related to the idea of 'why should the state be involved?' in the sense that marriage has become institutionalized through both religion and state, but it is state which has the final say on the matter.
As to the question 'Why should people get married?' this can harken back to more pagan rituals but essentially the reasons/purposes should not [logically] concern either state or religion in any authoritative manner. People have their own reasons which the state has no interest in.
With state condoned marriage what people get is the legal right to refer to one another as husband/wife/legal partners etc...vows are generally not required but signatures and verbalizing ones full names are.

Re: Getting Married
Post #4A state's involvement is only to insure certain rights can be guaranteed, such as right to; inheritance, tax benefits, medical benefits, death benefits. housing benefits, et.. But if none of these, or other benefits, matter, two people can certainly live together without a state recognized marriage.William wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 3:27 pmMy question is related to the idea of 'why should the state be involved?' in the sense that marriage has become institutionalized through both religion and state, but it is state which has the final say on the matter.

Re: Getting Married
Post #5So the custom of marriage somehow was infiltrated by the wheelers and the dealers who want contracts drawn up and agreed to before relationship can occur...where there is money to be made...there are investments to protect.Miles wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 5:14 pmA state's involvement is only to insure certain rights can be guaranteed, such as right to; inheritance, tax benefits, medical benefits, death benefits. housing benefits, et.. Re: Getting Married
Post #6I've always felt the state got involved because that's what people wanted it to do. They wanted some of their desires to have the force of law behind them.William wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 2:34 pmSo the custom of marriage somehow was infiltrated by the wheelers and the dealers who want contracts drawn up and agreed to before relationship can occur...where there is money to be made...there are investments to protect.Miles wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 5:14 pmA state's involvement is only to insure certain rights can be guaranteed, such as right to; inheritance, tax benefits, medical benefits, death benefits. housing benefits, et.. Post #7Religion works in the same manner. Two edges of the same sword - church and state...Miles wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 4:22 pmI've always felt the state got involved because that's what people wanted it to do.
