Over sixty valid deities in the OT

Post by Willum »

So I knew there were other gods listed in the Torah/OT, but I didn't realize there were over sixty!

Sixty deities spoken about as if they were, to spout the phrase, "living gods."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category: ... brew_Bible

How can the OT claim to be monotheistic, when Asherah (Ha-Sarah), is Yahweh's wife, and so many other deities are part of the narrative?

We all thought Judaism was monotheistic, but it has as many gods as any other religion.

Can anyone explain this?

If you are Judaic, is it OK to worship one of the less bloodthirsty ones? Dagon, god of grain and the oceans, seems nice.

Fine, not a problem. I'll be happy to examine any evidence you care to present in response to the above request should you change your mind.
You mean of course, to ignore and claim what is submitted is not evidence, surely?

I certainly hope you contemplate what you have read here, and use it to drive you to the truth of non-theism.
I will never understand how someone who claims to know the ultimate truth, of God, believes they deserve respect, when they cannot distinguish it from a fairy-tale.

You know, science and logic are hard: Religion and fairy tales might be more your speed.

To continue to argue for the Hebrew invention of God is actually an insult to the very concept of a God. - Divine Insight

Does God eat?
Does God breath?

Is there anything we associate with living associated with you God?
No.

To repeat, every god in the Bible; Dagon, Asherath, etc. are living gods, with no reason to think otherwise.

No, the God of the bible is not a physical being, he does not need to eat or breath.

Yes, everything we associate with intelligent life. Observation, action, communication, thought and emotion. Indeed the title "The Living God" is only ever applied in scripture to YHWH (Jehovah).

You've just disclaimed away the most important properties of life to invent a weird, non sequitur of a definition that no biologist would accept. That would be like me asserting a definition of "god" that specifically excluded any sort of supernatural power.
Zippy the Clown is not a transcendent being, she is neither omniscient nor omnipotent.

She is associated with everything we associate with gods, though. She has a great sense of humor, is compassionate of children, never eats pork, and rides a tiny bicycle.

And I should care why ...?

The God of the bible is not a biological organsim and science has no language to classify Him. Biblically, YHWH classifies himself ...
EXODUS 3:15

So God said to Moses: “I Will Become What I Choose* to Become.”*+ And he added: “This is what you are to say to the Israelites, ‘I Will Become has sent me to you.’”+

And that is good enough for me and all that worship Him.

Peace to you,
Is there anything we associate with living associated with you(r) God?

With the God and Father of Christ? Yes.

He fathers (begets).

He has breath (holy spirit); how else could He have breathed life into Adam?

He has blood (also holy spirit). It is not the red blood that we currently have, but God is Spirit. He has the blood (holy spirit) appropriate to His Being.

He speaks (how else could he have spoken the Light into being?) Living beings speak; communicate; comfort; love; teach.

He has emotion; intelligence; wisdom; sentience.

All of these things are associated with living beings, are they not? Is there a non-living being that fathers children (and therefore has seed), that has breath, that has blood, that speaks and communicates, that has thoughts, emotion, intelligence, wisdom and sentience?

Peace again to you!

So, by your own admission, your God is NOT alive by any definition of life.
Only imaginary definitions of life.
Fitting.

Ah, so that isn’t metaphor, then?

Air doesn’t create life.
Sorry, but that must be magic breathe, not air.
Please reconsider your answer.

I don't know what you are talking about. How does this address my comments? Who said air creates life?
