The multiverse solution to the problem of evil

Post by PeterPan »

If God is omnipotent and benevolent, then God must have made every possible universe in which good outweighs evil. After all, it is better to make an absolutely perfect universe AND a good but imperfect universe than to only make the perfect universe.

Agree or disagree?

It invites the problematic. Is an absolutely perfect universe the goal and can there be an absolutely perfect evil universe in contrast to an absolutely perfect good universe?

Is our current universe the result of an attempt at finding an answer to that question?

Is there any reason to think that God cannot be omnipotent and benevolent and still create these different-state universes?

We'd have to get our terms clear to have a fruitful conversation. I would say a "multiverse" is one "possible universe," but you seem to treat a multiverse as a collection of possible universes. If the latter is what you mean, then why wouldn't it be better to have all 'universes' in the multiverse be absolutely perfect? For that matter, what is a "perfect" universe?

No, any god must have made the universe identical to his own will.
The problem is, were there a god, we just have no idea what it thinks is good.
Sorry, it isn't what we think it is.

Maybe, in Biblical point of view this world is like the imperfect universe for people to learn to know good and evil as they wanted. In the beginning people were expelled from perfect world to this first death, because they wanted to know evil. Here we can experience evil. Luckily soul cannot be destroyed by anything of this world and therefore evil is not a problem. So, perhaps you are right.

Why? Why is it that just because a god can sometimes be benevolent mean that in a particular universe good must outweigh evil? Perhaps his malevolence had greater influence on how a universe turned out, and any universe overseen by such a god would be more likely to have evil that outweighed good.

Your sentence here isn't making sense. Perhaps better punctuation or rephrasing would help.
