Christianity and Hatred for People

Post by unknown soldier »

Is there a relationship between Christianity and hatred for people? I've read that early on the critics of Christianity accused it of being hatred for humanity. Most apologists would strongly deny such a charge. They tell us that Christ taught love and that all those who would hate in his name are acting against his teachings. To begin to resolve this disagreement, let's take a look at what two "locals" have to say.

I think that is good, because if unrighteous people would live forever, they would turn the eternal life into eternal suffering for all, which I think would not be nice.

I don’t think death is evil.

...God knows the future. God knew the eternal destiny of all of those that He put to death before He sentenced them to eternal separation from His goodness. That is what dying without belief in Jesus or in this case God is eternal separation from the goodness of God.
When I read comments like these I tend to feel threatened and degraded. Am I such a worthless wretch that my life can be snuffed out any time at the Christian God's whim, and Christians would just shrug their shoulders saying I got what I deserved? Can my entire community be destroyed if some "guy in the sky" judges it to be disobedient to him?

In any event, I sure don't feel loved.

It's not really what?
Absurd. The psychopathic tendency irrational? There's nothing irrational about it. It's pure naked self interest. How is that irrational? Where's the pathway from rationality to an egalitarian virtue? The universe that the fundamental atheists inhabit is so intensely conditioned by mythological presuppositions that they take for granted the ethic that emerges out of that as if its just a given. A rational given.

Where do your morals come from and what happens if society removes the mythological presuppositions that Western culture is predicated upon?
This question is irrelevant to the flaws in ESG's claim as is the rest of your post.
No it isn't. He said: "So where does civility come from? What are you basing your belief that slavery is wrong? Why do you care about the well being of the people in society?" Which you said was absurd. Why is it absurd?

Nope, I didn't refer to this as absurd. You've lost the track here, David. In fact, these comments weren't directed to me and I didn't respond to them at all.

You did not express a counter-argument saying where you thought civility came from.
You're right, I didn't. I revealed the absurdity of your claim.
So you obviously do not know why you believe civility is good. Is it just some feeling that comes over you from time to time when you desire something from somebody and civility is the way to get what you desire?

You seem to be making a moral judgment without defining what you basing that moral judgment on.

I would suggest, if someone hasn't already, ignoring what these 'people' say and. If you want love, you won't find it in strangers nor, sometimes (and unfortunately) not within one's family or social circle.
Love is there is you want to find it, but not in most, if not all, people IMO.

True words, for sure.
While I'm no longer a Christian by definition, I do still have Christian friends. And while we don't agree with everything, we are still friends. They tend not to push their agenda on me and I don't push mine on them.
It's a shame you don't feel loved. But there are people out there, Christian or not, that aren't like the ones you may see here and in your life. They can be found, if you look for them.
Otherwise, be strong and continue to 'do you', as we have more power within ourselves than most like to admit.
Have a great, potentially godless, day!

I strongly disagree. How much evil do we need to see from the Christian religion until we wake up to see the root of the problem? Do you seriously want Christians to be like Christ? If they were like him, then they would hate Jews because Jews don't believe the Gospel; they would have reputations for being drunkards; they would disrespect their families and break up other families; they would preach the barbaric Mosaic Law that mandated killing insubordinate children; and a host of other evils too numerous to mention.
It's a shame you don't feel loved.
Actually, I don't feel loved by the Christian religion. I fear it as a threat to myself and society.
But there are people out there, Christian or not, that aren't like the ones you may see here and in your life. They can be found, if you look for them.
I am one of them!

Emphasis MINE

What evidence do you have that Jesus hated Jews? Jesus was himself Jewish, all of his first disciples were Jews. There is nothing Jesus said or did that indicated he had any anomosity for Jewish people. Where do you get this caricature of a Jesus that hated his own people?

I think your opinion is one that's not shared with most people, Christian or not. And that's fine, of course. I don't ever remember anywhere in the bible Jesus saying he hates Jews, Jesus being drunk, disrespecting families, etc. (if that's what you're saying). But again, if that's the Jesus you see, then no, I can see why you would disagree.
I fear it as a threat to myself and society.
I can see where you're coming from there!

Why do you ask for evidence that you don't want and cannot accept? Your post here makes it obvious to me that you already have your mind made up that Jesus could not hate Jews. It is revealing, though, that you posted a Bible passage that has Jesus falsely accusing the Jews of murdering the prophets.

By the way, I've heard that it's common for Jehovah's Witnesses to hate Jews. I used to know a Jehovah's Witness who made anti-Jewish remarks in a letter to me. We were engaging in a "letter debate," and we got onto the subject of the Jews. He said that they "rejected Christ," and I responded that the vast majority of Jews never had a Jesus to reject. He became angry with that fact and started to insult Jews and the way they practice their religion.

Anyway, you Jehovah's Witnesses can hate Jews if you feel that way. It's just important that we understand the roots of anti-Jewish violence. The New Testament is that root no matter what characters appear in it or who wrote it. It portrays Jews as comic-book style villains out to murder the innocent Jesus (and Paul and many others). Jesus is quoted as saying the Jews have the Devil as their father.

It's odd that those who study the Bible so much miss these facts, or if they don't miss these facts, they don't end up atheists like I did. Maybe I just respect the truth more than they do.
