We see 'the church' actively trying, throughout history, to control the sex lives of humanity. From saying what's right or what's wrong, to birth control, it seems like 'the church' has an interest in the sex lives of everyone, even committed couples. People even use the bible to say what's right and wrong in the context of sex.
While we can guess why 'the church' is interested in the sex lives of people, what's God's deal?
If he can see everything you do, why does sex seem to be one of his (many) hot buttons? Why does God want to control who (and in some cases, what) people have sex with?
Or does he not care and it's 'the church' that's taking up the battle?
MODS: If this better suits the RELIGION AND SEXUALITY section, feel free to move as necessary.
Why is sex so interesting to God?

Re: Why is sex so interesting to God?
Post #91Sex is powerful. As such it can be abused.
If sex in the best light is an opportunity for love, then it is exalted.
If sex can be used for selfishness, then it can be perverted and lay the ground for a person's destruction. Just look at porn addiction and human trafficking.
A seed must be watered with pure water. Not with coca-cola or mountain dew.
One must look at the end goal of sex. Procreation. Relationship.
Sex is something so strong that most of human society is controlled by it. The question is, can such a powerful force be used for good or used for death?

Post #92So why then do you think god abhors homosexual sex so much. From my Bible searches he never says.Dimmesdale wrote: ↑Sat Mar 06, 2021 1:37 pm Sex is powerful. As such it can be abused.

Well, human trafficking isn't about sex, but kidnapping to use others for profit. As for porn addiction, that is unfortunate, but no more so than being addicted to alcohol---and even less so. So is being addicted to drugs, prescription and otherwise. Or avarice. Not that these absolve addiction to porn of all possible harm, but simply puts it into perspective a bit.If sex can be used for selfishness, then it can be perverted and lay the ground for a person's destruction. Just look at porn addiction and human trafficking.
One possible "end goal." In fact, I don't recall any Bible verse that says procreation is the end goal of sexual intercourse. If you have one please share. That aside, we have Bible verses such as:One must look at the end goal of sex. Procreation. Relationship.
Song of Songs 7:6-12
6 How beautiful you are and how pleasing, my love, with your delights! 7 Your stature is like that of the palm, and your breasts like clusters of fruit. 8 I said, “I will climb the palm tree; I will take hold of its fruit.” May your breasts be like clusters of grapes on the vine, the fragrance of your breath like apples, 9 and your mouth like the best wine. May the wine go straight to my beloved, flowing gently over lips and teeth. 10 I belong to my beloved, and his desire is for me. 11 Come, my beloved, let us go to the countryside, let us spend the night in the villages. 12 Let us go early to the vineyards to see if the vines have budded, if their blossoms have opened, and if the pomegranates are in bloom— there I will give you my love.

which recognize sexual attraction aside from any procreative goal. And when on considers the clitoris, whose only function is to provide pleasure for the female, it seems obvious that god gave it to women for just that purpose; to enjoy sex, because it operates regardless of any procreative goal, and even while a woman is pregnant.
To a very limited degree. Not that it doesn't have a place in social interactions, but society is far more controlled by the political machinery that runs it, and the social constructs it develops.Sex is something so strong that most of human society is controlled by it.
Can sex be used for death? I suppose so, but I don't know how. What specifically do you have in mind, and is it any more grievous than other forces? The question is, can such a powerful force be used for good or used for death?

Re: Why is sex so interesting to God?
Post #93Sex can be used for death in many ways. One of which is by distracting people from higher values. If I care only about having sex with people, I naturally think about my own happiness, not theirs. In a healthy relationship there is sacrifice, there is a using of one's time for the other person; actually caring about the other person, not just what I can extract from them. Someone who is only self-interested, in one thing, satisfying his or her senses, has no balance regarding their priorities. They end up taking what they want and leaving the rest. That is one example about how relationships are destroyed. When it's all about "me, me and myself."

Post #94How does having sex with people---as opposed to having sex with other animals I assume---result in death? And just how many people have you heard of that ignored higher values (whatever they may be!!!) because they "care only care about having sex with people"? Personally, I haven't heard of a single one.Dimmesdale wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 7:17 pmSex can be used for death in many ways. One of which is by distracting people from higher values. In light of your "Sex can be used for death in many ways." How does what you say here result in death? In a healthy relationship there is sacrifice, there is a using of one's time for the other person; actually caring about the other person, not just what I can extract from them. Someone who is only self-interested, in one thing, satisfying his or her senses, has no balance regarding their priorities. They end up taking what they want and leaving the rest. Re: Why is sex so interesting to God?
Post #95There is such a thing as figurative death. The destruction of a relationship - that is a type of death in my view. As well as the death of quality of life. A destroyed marriage, because of adultery say, can result in the dysfunctional lives of children. A ripple effect essentially. That may lead to actual death.Miles wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 9:16 pm

Because of causation over a period of time. Like with the example of adultery: infidelity on the part of a man leads a woman to feel angry, so she gets divorced. This effects the children adversely. Therefore one of the kids starts using drugs. And that leads him down an addicted road, to the point where he uses heroin. Then he dies of an overdose. Cause and effect.
If the man in this scenario managed to resist temptation, maybe even in subtle ways, he might have been able to preserve his marriage, and afterwards the life of his son or daughter.

To be clear: Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.

I must assume that knowing is better than not knowing, venturing than not venturing; and that magic and illusion, however rich, however alluring, ultimately weaken the human spirit.

So it is still rooted in sex. The misuse of it.
