Discrepancy between Leviticus 23:6 and Matthew 26:17?

Post by rstrats »

Leviticus 23:6 says : “And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread...”

However, Matthew 26:17 says: “Now on the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?”

Any thoughts on the seeming discrepancy?

Could you describe what you think the discrepancy is?

Leviticus 23:6 says : “And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread...”

I am making the assumption that Leviticus 23:6 is saying that the feast of unleavened bread begins on the 15th of the month, whereas Matthew 26:17 indicates that there is at least a day before the 15th for the beginning of the Feast.

Of course if the Leviticus passage isn't saying that it begins on the 15th, then there doesn't seem to be any discrepancy.
How are you getting this from Matthew 26:17? There is nothing in the passage about the day of the month. It does imply that at this point in history the feat of unleavened bread lasted more than one day, but it does not tell us what day of the month the first day of that festival took place.

Matthew 26:17 says: “Now on the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? Are you suggesting that it could have been on the 15th when the disciples asked their question?

Or the 14th. Since Hebrew society started the new day at sundown, it is reasonable short-hand to say "the first day" as the morning, with the celebration itself taking place that evening. I expect that a person in the culture could reasonable understand what was happening.

There is a discrepancy between the gospels themselves.
