Cain, god and incest

Post by nobspeople »

The story is an old one: son covets sister, kills brother and breeds with said sister (Genesis 4:17 states that after Cain had killed Abel, "Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch".)

For discussion:
Is it still OK for a siblings to marry and conceive in today's world in god's eyes, or was that only something needed to happen in a world with so few people, genetic diversity (and morality) weren't necessary?
Is it still OK for a siblings to marry and conceive in today's world in humanity's eyes?
Or, like most biblical stories, we have to 'understand' what the writer 'meant'? Or the like?
Have a great, potentially godless, day!

Scripturally (ie from gods view as expressed in the bible) marrying and conceiving children with a sibling or close family member is NOT acceptable today although evidently it was earlier in mankind's history*.

1. Such behaviours were outlawed by the Mosaic law.

2. Christians are expected to obey secular laws which generally have made marrying siblings or close relatives illegal.

* Abraham for example married his half sister Sara.

Why do you think it was OK with god then but not with god now?

In my personal opinion because orignally back close to the time of Eden, humans were closer to physical perfection and arguably marrying a sibling or a close relative would not have caused the physical problems to any offspring that it would today. Later I imagine, God tolerated it because he knew humans would normally develop a natural aversion to sexual contact with a close sibling one has been raised with anyway.

A good possibility. Though I'd think god could have simply made more people as close to perfection as the other ones and not needed any incestual contact. Or maybe god's OK with it, even today? And it's taboo only in more modern times?

.

Interestingly enough, according to a Wikipedia article on incest in the Bible, the Bible does not forbid sexual relationships between

1. a man and his niece,
2. a step sibling,
3. a mother's sibling's spouse.
4. a spouse's sister's child,
5. a mother's brother's wife

Now I know one of the most practical reasons for not having incestuous sex between close relatives is the increased likelihood of birth defects in a resulting child, BUT aside from this very real issue, is there any other good reason to prohibit incestuous sex, such as that between a sterile brother and sister, or whatever?

The Mosaic law prohibited having sex with anyone's wife (except one's own). The bible word for sex with someone elses wife is adultery prohibited by the 7th commandement.
