Church standing against racism

Post by otseng »

Yesterday, I volunteered as a photographer for the OneRace March in Atlanta. Approximately 6000 people gathered at Centennial Olympic Park for worship, prayer, listening to speakers, and marching to the capital to demonstrate against racial injustice.

I don't know how they were able to get the Centennial Olympic Park on Juneteenth. The organizers must have good connections to have been able to pull that off.

I was impressed how many people from different races came to rally against racial injustice. One pastor, who has been working for years for racial reconciliation, noted this was the first time he's seen such a large interracial group standing together against black injustice and for racial unity. Another pastor preached if this country is going to solve racial injustice, it must be done in the church first. I wholeheartedly agree and I was quite proud of the church standing together for racial reconciliation.

Here's a video from the march to the capital:

From the OneRace FAQ:
What is OneRace Movement?

OneRace Movement is hosting an event called March on Atlanta on June 19, 2020. OneRace is multi-ethic collective of hundreds of churches and ministries throughout Atlanta and around the U.S. working to displace the spirit of racism and release a movement of racial reconciliation. Our mission is to teach a city how to love regardless of color, class, or culture. For more information, please visit http://oneracemovement.com.

What is March on Atlanta ?

In light of the racially motivated violence of the past several weeks and the corresponding protests across our nation, we are calling for a clear biblical response of righteousness and justice from the Church of our city.

June 19th or “Juneteenth” commemorates the emancipation of African Americans from slavery. The purpose of this march is to decry racism in every form and declare unity from the Church across lines of race, class, denomination, and culture. We want the world to see a demonstration of truth & love, demanding that the story change for the generations to come.

Years ago there used to be a famous theme among Third World scholars who condemned racialist colonialism. There were variations but it all boiled down to this:

When the missionaries came, they had the Bible, we had the land. When the missionaries left, we had the Bible, they had the land.

Historically there can be no question that the churches were always at the forefront of imperialistic colonialism and racist genocide. They brought Christianity, diseases, fomented racial/ethnic conflict, spread alcohol or other corruptives in order to cause illness or susceptibility to illness or degeneracy, and rendered people helpless so that when armies or navies attacked they were easily conquered. Small wonder why Third World peoples have always condemned the likes of a Columbus or Junipero Serra. Statues of these murderers were recently taken down in the USA for that reason. This much to the consternation of the admirers of these imperialistic murderers. But much to the strong approval of Third World advocates.

The Bible's New Testament requires its followers to be at peace with ALL men. Because of this, it is good of preachers to take the initiative in promoting brotherhood and reconciliation among all peoples. While long overdue, this should have taken place decades, indeed, centuries ago. But bear in mind that mere apologies for past criminality and genocide is of no value unless and until it is backed up with compensation and indemnification for those crimes. The Catholic church officially apologized for its past imperialism in Latin America but it kept all the gold it stole from those lands. Now it is time for them to return the stolen capital. Only then will its apologies really matter. The USA churches which are calling for reconciliation need to make this priority one throughout the land and the entire world. When full compensation for past depredations has been rendered, only then will reconciliation fully take place.

There is no need to march as a movement, true Christianity should be clearly identified as a religion in which its members live and work together in peace regardless of skin colour or nationality. This will stand out particularly in times of war or when civil or political ideologies divide populations along racial, social or national barriers, Christians naturally continue to confess that they couldn't possibly fight against their German or Japanese (or Hutu or Tusti) brothers and sister nor support any effort to kill them or anyone just because they originate from a different tribe or part of the world or happen to have a lighter or darker skin colour.

Talk (and marching) is cheap, actions go down in history to show who really "walks the walk" of Christian impatiality!

You forgot gender identity, sexual preference, and religion. True Christianity should live and work together in peace regardless of those, too, right?

Of course! True Christians should be peaceable with all people regardless of their gender identity, sexual preference, skin colour or religion.

ROMANS 12:18 - Good News Translation

Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody.

The OP was speaking specifically about RACISM and so I addressed this point. The statement you isolated was specifically describing how Christians co-exist with each other in their own Christian community regardless of skin colour or nationality (obviously there aren't other "religions" within the Christian community).

There are tens of thousands of different religions within the umbrella term 'Christianity' without harmony / agreement on doctrine and dogma. Some groups don't even believe the trinity concept that is so sacred to others. Some groups seem more racist than others. Some seem more willing to acknowledge the beliefs of others while some preach they only they are 'going to heaven' after they die.

CLARIFICATION: When I say "Christian Community" or "true Christians" I was refering exclusively to the religion of Jehovahs Witnesses according to the beliefs of this group.

In view of the above, I presume the beliefs of Jehovahs Witnesses may be presented in this forum since {quote} "beliefs, particularly religious beliefs are the subject of debate {end quote} . The JW beliefs on this matter have been published on their official website and all my faith statements are in relation to such beliefs.

That seems to be suggesting an attitude that JWs have exclusive claim to being "Christian community" or "True Christian."

Small wonder that the sect is not highly regarded by many or most fellow Christians.

That is the Jehovahs Witness official belief. If I'm not mistaken the discussion of beliefs is appropriate for this forum.

Thank you for clarifying for all to see that Jehovahs Witness's official position is that they have exclusive claim to being "Christian community" or "True Christian".

Perhaps related:
Jehovah’s Witnesses have a low retention rate relative to other U.S. religious groups. Among all U.S. adults who were raised as Jehovah’s Witnesses, two-thirds (66%) no longer identify with the group.

Compared with other U.S. religious groups, Jehovah’s Witnesses tend to be less educated. A solid majority of adult Jehovah’s Witnesses (63%) have no more than a high school diploma, compared with, for example, 43% of evangelical Protestants and 37% of mainline Protestants.

Two-thirds LEAVE. Could it be that they come to realize that the beliefs and practices are pure hokum?

By contrast, 35% of Evangelical Protestants and Mormons leave their respective groups.
