What so many people fail to realize is that there are two (2) dynamics going on here which on the surface seem unrelated which is our biggest mistake
World Oil Reserves
1,650,585,140,000 barrels
47 years of oil left
(at current consumption levels)
World Oil Statistics - Worldometer (worldometers.info)
This means, at current consumption all the known oil reserves will be sucked up and burned in 47 years.
Which means that the world’s major energy source will not be able to meet demand in 20+/- years.
If the world acts now to gradually switch from oil to renewables the transition will a peaceful one. If we do not do this, a world global fight will occur to control what oil is left. This will lead to WW3 which in itself will burn up what is left.
The term Armageddon comes to mind.
used in a generic sense to refer to any end of the world scenario.
Armageddon - Wikipedia
This may not concern you because you will not be around then; but your grandchildren will !!
Fighting climate change and discovering new renewable energy sources are fighting to achieve the same thing. The survival of the human race.

Post #11Back in the 1970s, wasn't there something that said there's only 20 or so years of oil left?!? I seem to remember something like that.thomasdixon wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 2:45 pm What so many people fail to realize is that there are two (2) dynamics going on here which on the surface seem unrelated which is our biggest mistake

At any rate, the oil won't be around forever no matter what time frame we use. And moving from it will surely help, but how much? Maybe that's a question for another thread.
Will people find another energy source? Probably. They're already using other sources. The real question is WHEN will this source (or sources) replace oil entirely? Humans aren't keen on change - especially when money's involved.
I'd doubt I'm here in 20 years so I'll probably never seen 'the end of oil' if that 20 year time table is accurate.
So will humans fine another source?
Surely.
When?
Not soon enough.
Will it help?
Some. But modern humans are takers, as a species. Until we slow human growth and learn how to live WITH the planet instead of ON it, we will always have problems. That doesn't mean we shouldn't act to correct them, but those envisioning an Utopia are in for a rude awakening IMO.
Have a great, potentially godless, day!

Post #13There is a false narrative that says we have a global warming problem and if we fix it we can move on. The truth is that we have a constellation of problems and global warming is only one of them. Fish stocks are collapsing, agricultural land is now so depleted there are only 55 harvests left, water shortages are going to affect many people soon, the population is exploding...and many others.
All these things are coming at us at the same time and all of them have to be fixed at the same time. Global warming itself is a huge problem and the atmosphere coming from cop26 in Glasgow is despairing. Boris Johnson said that the most depressing thing about global warming is that 'one gets the feeling it cannot be solved'. That says a lot.
Whatever happens we have difficult times ahead. I personally don't see how all of this can be solved.

Even if you did see, how would you be able to convey that information to those who are best positioned to do anything about it?I personally don't see how all of this can be solved.

Post #15There are human beings living on the north pole where the temperature is below zero all year long and they are happy folks, raising a family. Humans are living all over our planet in the harshest conditions enjoying life with a smile on their faces. The reason is simple enough, humans can adapt to whatever conditions confront them.
Look at the children, in the lower left corner aqnd the rest, they are loving life. (:-

The Devastating Effects of Child Starvation & Malnutrition in Africa
In sub-Saharan Africa, a shocking 28 million children are experiencing stunted growth due to malnutrition. Stunting prevents children from developing to their full potential mentally and physically, and it is largely irreversible.
Stunting is not the only form of malnutrition that affects children. Children who have severe acute malnutrition, the deadliest form of extreme hunger, can succumb to the disease in just a few days. Children who die in this way suffer immensely as their vital organ functions slow down and eventually stop.

Post #18Yes they can but not 7+ billion of them. We live in a highly interconnected world and if something breaks in Hong Kong it is felt in London. If something breaks in New York it is felt in Berlin. The danger is that there will be a domino effect through the world with disastrous results. In the whole system of things the economy is the weakest link and if that goes many unpleasant things will follow.

What I find most interesting about this is that it doesn't matter whether one is materialist or spiritist, there is little to no focus on the actual problem and finding solution together.
When an economy is created to serve the few rather than everyone, it will always fail the majority when it collapses. The danger is that there will be a domino effect through the world with disastrous results. So this is an outline of the problem. How does one find solution?Yes, there is great political inertia and vested interests to be overcome just to get things moving.

Post #20They say we have 9 years to avoid 1.5 degrees excess heating. Some say only 6 years. We are not going to rebuild the world in 6 to 9 years so there is no solution. People should prepare for disruption that will last for many years to come.
