Listening to a podcast recently, the person being interviewed claimed to be a pastor (denomination not mentioned). Typically, my experience says pastors are of a christian faith, so that's the understanding I took from this interview.
The pastor said, he and a friend had a traumatic experience while hiking to the point they returned to his home and had 'some drinks'. While alcohol specifically wasn't mentioned, the context led the listeners to believe alcohol was consumed to help relieve their nerves.
During the the interview, words of a 'negative nature' were spoken as well (words not permitted here of the four letter variety).
It made me wonder, what kind of pastor retreats to their home to curse and drink alcohol? Aside from his non-stop talking (not sure how he breathed during the interview), the language and alcohol consumption were the only vices he presented.
For discussion:
Is it inappropriate for pastors (or whatever equivalent church leadership you wish) to drink alcohol to ease their nerves?
What about cursing?
If permitted, at what point in YPOV is it too much and why?

Re: Pastors that drink
Post #41Nothing in that could be said to specifically apply to atheists. If we do have any sort of platform, then it is merely to stand there and say "I don't believe you. If you want to convince me that you have the truth then support what you say on your platform with some compelling evidence". I am not made uncomfortable by the surety expressed by believers. Their surety definitely does make me feel dumbfounded. On the other hand, I am made to feel uncomfortable by some of their actions aimed at enforcing their beliefs on everyone else.2ndpillar2 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 1:32 pm Maybe some who are "sure", make you somewhat uncomfortable, and to try and cast them down, you come up with an unsurety platform, which is apparently the underpinning of Atheist posturing. Your very existence is based on unsurety. You could simply be the product of someone's dream. When the sun comes up, and they may wake up, and you may no longer exist. Although in a parallel universe, you may exist as gcT.

Post #42Absolutely. Culture shapes some religious beliefs so I wouldn't think this any differentTcg wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 12:00 pmI wonder too if it's not a cultural thing. For some drinking alcoholic beverages is the norm. Not drunkenness, just drinking. In the U.S. it seems that any drinking is looked down on at least in certain circles.nobspeople wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 11:46 am
Probably because a lot of negativity is taught about alcohol. It's seen as not something in which a 'god fearing' person would partake.
There's also some churches that teach about positive things only going into your body. Cigarettes, alcohol, drugs...those are things many consider bad.
But, you also have trans fats, HFCS, caffeine... which are also considered 'bad' (or at least, not good for you) that most thinking the cigarettes, alcohol, drugs are bad, considered OK.
Double standards and all that I suppose.
As I said, humans=weird 8-)but drinking.

Post #43Flooding the forum with meaningless questions. This is an obvious form of sensationalism. So what, a pastor drinks. Can a pastor drink? Yes.

Post #47Jim Jones liked to drink, too. Not alcohol - at least not there towards the end.

Here's the story of one:
Pastors who drink are apparently nothing new.Genesis 9:20 Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard. 21 He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent.
2 Peter 2:5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;

Re: Pastors that drink
Post #50Neither of these is explicitly forbidden in the Bible and the approach varies by denomination and their particular hermeneutical approaches to Scripture. A good chunk of my extended family is made up of German Lutherans, some of which still live in Frankenmuth, Michigan and my uncle worked in one of the local breweries. I can tell you from experience that they indulge in both drinking and religion to excess, sometimes at the same events.nobspeople wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 1:23 pmIt made me wonder, what kind of pastor retreats to their home to curse and drink alcohol?
