Following Christ

Reading Matthew 9 verse 9 -11.

The way Matthew dropped everything and instantly followed Jesus is a singular thing.
No hesitation, just obedience. How many people could do this? He abandoned all that he was, all he had and took a chance. Why? He who was regarded as scum of the earth. Further he invited Jesus and all his disciples to his home to eat. There joined by others who also were regarded as the worst of sinners by the self righteous Pharisees.

So what can be understood by this? To me it is inspirational, it's brilliant. Showing courage, open minds, curiosity and a wish to be better, to find God.
Of course others may think otherwise.

Where is it said that Matthew was regarded as scum of the earth?

And where is it said that Jesus and his disciples were "joined by others who also were regarded as the worst of sinners by the self righteous Pharisees"?

Regarding Rose2020's OP statement:

In those verses referenced above.
Those verses referenced above:

Matthew 9:9-11 (KJV)
9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?

Hmm. Not a thing about Matthew being scum or anything like it. Nor were the sinners Jesus ate with considered to be the "worst of sinners" by the Pharisees, who are never described as "self righteous" either. Seems you imagination and biases have taken over your descriptive powers here. I'll keep this in mind when reading your future narratives.

Lol! It is true I am blessed with a vivid imagination. However, my thoughts are not entirely idle conjecture. Tax collectors were much hated in those times as corruption and greed was rife. So Matthew and his friends were not regarded as ideal dinner hosts.

Of course Jesus was as always absolutely right. He came to help those who knew they were sinners, not those who were convinced of their own impeccable righteousness. The well do not need a doctor, the sick welcome one - or certainly should.
